The alleged shooter from Florida State University was seen in a new mugshot displaying a disfigured face, following his release from the hospital approximately one month after the tragic incident.
According to reports from the Tallahassee Police Department, 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner was discharged from a local hospital after an extended stay that included multiple surgeries to address the injuries he incurred during the shooting that occurred on April 17.
Ikner stands accused of taking the lives of two men and injuring six others during the shooting spree on campus. He sustained a severe gunshot wound to the jaw when officers returned fire as they responded to the active shooter situation.
Following his arrest, Ikner was transferred to Wakulla County Detention Facility, where he is set to await his initial court appearance.
According to the police, Ikner has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder, along with seven counts of attempted murder. Chief of Police Lawrence Revell emphasized the department’s dedication to justice and transparency in this grave matter.
Revell stated, “In any case of this magnitude, the Tallahassee Police Department is fully committed to justice, transparency, and the safety of our community. We are grateful for the collective efforts of our detectives, officers, medical personnel, and partner agencies in reaching this point in the investigation.”
Officials confirmed that Ikner’s transfer to another facility was a routine procedure due to the fact that he is the stepson of a deputy in the Leon County Sheriff’s Office. This measure aims to maintain the integrity of the legal process.
Investigators have determined that the firearm purportedly used in the attacks belonged to Ikner’s mother, Jessica Ikner, who has served as a law enforcement officer for over 18 years. Police officials have praised her for her service to the community, stating that she has done an exceptional job in her role.
Leon County Sheriff Walt McNeil acknowledged the situation during an April press conference, asserting, “Her service to this community has been exceptional. Unfortunately, her son had access to one of her weapons, which was found at the scene, and our investigation continues regarding how that weapon was utilized.”
Prior to the shooting, Ikner was vocal about his political views in an article published by an FSU student newspaper, where he was identified as a political science major. His opinions were notably expressed during anti-Trump protests held at the university.
Court records indicate that Ikner’s biological mother allegedly kidnapped him in 2015. This incident involved taking him to Norway in violation of a custody agreement, suggesting a troubled childhood that may have contributed to his current situation.
The Tallahassee Police Department has reiterated its commitment to transparency and accountability throughout the investigation. They have confirmed that the probable cause affidavit will be made publicly available following Ikner’s first court appearance.
Ikner is currently scheduled to appear in court for his initial hearing this Tuesday at 11 a.m., according to online court records.
