NASCAR’s Ryan Blaney Shares Insights on Racing’s Ultimate Challenge

Sunday promises to be a monumental day for motorsport enthusiasts across the globe.

With the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix in the morning, the Indianapolis 500 happening in the afternoon, and the Coca-Cola 600 taking place later that night, racing fans will be treated to a full day of thrilling events.

Ryan Blaney, driving the No. 12 Team Penske car, will represent his team in the Coca-Cola 600. His vehicle prominently features BodyArmor Chill drinks on its hood. Fellow NASCAR Cup Series driver Kyle Larson will be attempting one of the most demanding challenges in motorsport, known as “The Double.”

The Challenge of ‘The Double’

“The Double” entails competing in the Indy 500 and then flying directly to Charlotte to participate in the Coca-Cola 600. This remarkable feat is demanding, and only a select few have attempted it. Kyle Larson was among the five drivers to pursue this challenge last year but unfortunately did not make it to the NASCAR race as planned.

Blaney described watching Larson’s attempt last year as a special experience. “It’s the biggest day in racing,” he stated. “You got Monaco early, then you got Indy, and then we end it with the 600. I get up and watch Monaco in the morning, I cheer on the Penske guys for the 500 and then I get ready to go race. I think it’s a great feat. It was neat to watch him do it last year.”

He further added, “Last year didn’t really go his way with rain and stuff like that; it was kind of a crapshoot. Hopefully, it goes a little smoother for him this year just being able to do it all.”

Blaney’s Aspirations and Team Dynamics

Blaney’s interest in the attempt of “The Double” seems to be influenced by the fact that Team Penske has drivers competing at the Indy 500. He remarked, “But yeah, it’s something I’ve always considered. You never know, maybe down the road if I get a chance. I’m with a great team that has a chance to do it, but we’ll see. You never know; we’ll figure it out.”

Historical Context of ‘The Double’

Several legendary drivers have attempted “The Double” over the years. Alongside Larson, notable names such as John Andretti, Tony Stewart, Robby Gordon, and Kurt Busch have all taken on this challenge. Among them, only Tony Stewart successfully completed both races on the same day, but no driver has won either event while attempting the feat.

As anticipation builds for Sunday’s races, Larson is hopeful that he can alter the narrative surrounding this challenging endeavor.

Broadcast Information

The Indy 500 will be available for viewing on May 25, with coverage beginning at 10 a.m. ET on FOX. Fans can also enjoy the race through live streaming on selected platforms.
