Natalie Portman has expressed her outrage over the current immigration policies enforced by federal authorities, describing them as the worst example of humanity. Her comments came during a recent interview at the Sundance Film Festival, where she addressed the ongoing crackdown on immigration.
Recent reports indicate at least six individuals have lost their lives as a result of the Trump administration’s immigration policies. The most recent victim, Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen, was fatally shot by a Border Patrol officer in Minneapolis on January 24.
Portman did not hold back her criticism, stating, “What’s happening in our country right now is absolutely horrific. The actions taken by Trump’s administration, Kristi Noem, and ICE embody the worst of the worst of humanity.” Her passionate remarks emphasized a stark contrast between what she sees as government failures and the heartwarming community support displayed by Americans in recent times.
“We also have the best of the best in how individuals come together in communities, offering help and protection against injustice. I am proud to be American in light of the solidarity I’ve witnessed, but I am deeply saddened by the government’s actions,” she added during her interview.
Protests Erupt at Sundance Film Festival
Portman was not alone in her condemnation of ICE and its policies. Fellow actress Olivia Wilde joined her in wearing anti-ICE pins at the festival, which occurred soon after Pretti’s tragic death.
Authorities quickly characterized Pretti as an armed threat to officers involved in his fatal shooting. However, video evidence revealed that moments before the shooting, he was holding only a phone, which raises serious questions about the justification for the use of deadly force.
