EXCLUSIVE: Army Secretary Dan Driscoll firmly supported the deployment of National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., aimed at combating escalating violent crime, emphasizing that service members are enthusiastic about lending assistance to their communities.
In an interview with Fox News Digital, Driscoll highlighted that the D.C. Guard was uniquely equipped for this type of mission. He commended the 2,000 troops currently on duty, which include 800 from D.C. and 1,200 from six other states. Although some critics express concerns over a potential path toward militarized policing, Driscoll characterized those fears as misguided.
“We are the wealthiest nation in human history, yet allowing our capital to reflect high levels of violence is indeed tragic,” Driscoll stated. “From my conversations with individual Guard members, it is clear they are eager to embark on this mission.”
The objective of the deployment, initiated on August 7, has been framed by the Trump administration as a measure to bolster local and federal law enforcement efforts in D.C. Recently, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth declared that certain Guardsmen would be permitted to carry weapons during their operations throughout the city.
City officials have noted that the Guard’s presence has alleviated some of the pressures on an overwhelmed police department. However, questions linger about the parameters of this mission and the duration of the troops’ stay on the streets. Civil liberties organizations caution that such deployments risk normalizing military involvement in civilian law enforcement, creating potential long-term discord between communities and uniformed personnel.
“Much of the discourse surrounding the slippery slope argument is indeed flawed and fails to appreciate the crucial support the President and Secretary of Defense are offering to the residents of D.C. and to our nation,” Driscoll explained.
The White House has indicated that additional deployments of the Guard to other cities, including Chicago and Baltimore, could occur soon.
The Army National Guard has traditionally been called to action during instances of civil unrest or natural disasters but is seldom utilized for extended crime control operations. The ongoing debate regarding the D.C. deployment reflects the dual roles of the Guard, providing aid to state governors during local emergencies while simultaneously serving the federal government in national defense.
The Biden administration leaned heavily on the Guard during the COVID-19 pandemic and in the aftermath of the January 6 Capitol riot, which led to the mobilization of thousands of troops to secure the city.
Driscoll countered concerns that this mission might compromise the Guard’s preparedness for future deployments abroad. “These are soldiers with deep connections to their communities,
