The long-standing partnership between NBC and MSNBC faces a significant transformation as Comcast advances plans to restructure NBCUniversal. With the goal of revisiting its corporate strategies, Comcast will separate the famous Peacock brand from much of its cable assets, marking a pivotal moment in both networks’ histories.

According to reports, Comcast revealed its decision last year to spin off its cable networks into an independent entity known as Versant. This new company will house networks such as MSNBC, CNBC, USA Network, Oxygen, E!, SYFY, and the Golf Channel. In contrast, NBCUniversal will retain control over NBC News, the NBC News Now streaming service, Telemundo, and Bravo.

For years, NBC served as the backbone for MSNBC, supporting it with its news-gathering resources and notable talent. However, the impending division is set to be finalized by the close of 2025.

A Closer Look at the Name Change

One of the central points of interest regarding MSNBC’s future involved the potential retention of its name along with the iconic Peacock symbol. This uncertainty resolved recently when news broke that MSNBC will be rebranded as MS NOW. This new name stands for “My Source for News, Opinion, and the World,” indicating a shift towards a more personal and opinion-oriented approach.

Alongside the name change, the network recently unveiled a redesigned logo that replaces its long-recognized rainbow bird with a flag boasting red, white, and blue hues.

In an interesting twist, CNBC, which has always meant “Consumer News and Business Channel,” will not alter its name amidst this corporate shakeup.

MSNBC’s Identity Crisis

The rebranding comes at a time when MS NOW grapples with audience retention issues. Reports indicate that the network’s newly revamped lineup has faced challenges, with prominent figures like Jen Psaki experiencing a significant drop in viewership, shedding a staggering 47 percent of the audience her predecessors enjoyed.

New York City has been synonymous with NBC, particularly since MSNBC launched in 1996 from the renowned Rockefeller Center. However, amid this corporate divorce, NBC will retain ownership of their iconic headquarters, forcing MS NOW to relocate to a temporary space on 43rd Street while searching for a permanent location.

Additionally, MS NOW will vacate NBC’s well-known D.C. bureau near the U.S. Capitol. To establish a stronger independent presence, the cable network plans to develop its own office space.

Talent Transfers and Departures

Throughout their years of collaboration, many hosts and correspondents freely moved between NBC and MSNBC to provide coverage for major news stories. In recent months, MS NOW has proactively bolstered its talent pool, particularly since NBC will retain the core news operations post-separation. Notably, veteran journalist Carol Leonnig has made headlines for her move from the Washington Post to MS NOW in an effort to strengthen its reporting capabilities.

With this transition, a custody dispute over key talent has emerged. NBC has claimed data and polling expert Steve Kornacki, who became a staple during MSNBC’s election night broadcasts. Andrea Mitchell, who concluded her long-running program “Andrea Mitchell Reports” in February, will continue her contributions as NBC’s chief Washington and foreign affairs correspondent.

José Díaz-Balart, known for his work on MSNBC, transitioned earlier this year and will now anchor “NBC Nightly News Saturday” alongside his responsibilities with Noticias Telemundo.

On the other hand, several prominent NBC reporters have been enlisted to join the ranks of MS NOW. These include notable figures such as Ken Dilanian and Ryan Reilly, both justice beat reporters, as well as national correspondent Jacob Soboroff, White House correspondent Vaughn Hillyard, and internet reporter Brandy Zadrozny. Along with these journalists, several other staff members are also set to make the transition to the newly branded network.

Staying the Course Amid Change

Despite the turbulent changes, all current MSNBC personalities will continue their roles throughout MS NOW’s rebranding process. This includes Stephanie Ruhle, who has provided analysis for NBC News while hosting “The 11th Hour” on the cable side.

Interestingly, Willie Geist, who co-hosts “Morning Joe” on MSNBC and helms “Sunday TODAY” for NBC, has secured a unique arrangement that allows him to partly maintain both roles even after the separation. This strategic move could help smooth the transition for audiences who are accustomed to his dual presence.
