The NBA is actively pursuing cell phones and other assets from various teams amidst an ongoing investigation into unlawful sports gambling practices. This inquiry has raised significant concerns within the league about integrity and compliance.
According to an NBA representative, the league enlisted the help of an independent law firm to probe the serious allegations laid out in a recent federal indictment. The spokesperson affirmed that all individuals involved in the investigation have been cooperative and have preserved relevant documents as required.
Notably, Mike Mancias, an assistant trainer for the Los Angeles Lakers, along with executive administrator Randy Mims, who both share close connections with NBA superstar LeBron James, have already submitted their cell phones to Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, the law firm assisting in this investigation.
Fox News Digital has sought comments from both the NBA and the Lakers regarding these troubling developments.
The NBA finds itself engulfed in a scandal following the federal indictment of Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, and former NBA player Damon Jones. These individuals are accused of being involved in a criminal gambling scheme.
The situation escalated further when Congress intervened. On a recent Friday, the House Committee on Commerce dispatched a letter to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, requesting detailed information concerning the scandal. Significantly, this bipartisan letter was co-signed by six members of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
The committee’s letter outlines five crucial elements they sought clarification on from Commissioner Silver:
1. Details about the Betting Practices: This point pertains to the fraudulent and illegal betting practices allegedly involving NBA players, coaches, and officials, including those identified in the recent indictment.
2. Actions to Prevent Information Disclosure: The committee is interested in what measures the NBA intends to take to inhibit the unauthorized use of nonpublic information for illicit betting purposes.
3. Effectiveness of the NBA’s Code of Conduct: Legislators are questioning whether the existing Code of Conduct adequately prohibits illegal activities, including the inappropriate disclosure of confidential information.
4. Regulatory Gaps: The committee asks for an explanation about any regulatory deficiencies that could enable such gambling schemes to take place within the NBA.
5. Reevaluation of Partnerships: Congress seeks insight into whether the NBA is reconsidering its arrangements with sports betting firms in light of these revelations.
During a recent appearance on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show,” Commissioner Silver expressed support for enhanced federal regulation concerning sports betting, highlighting the need for a more standardized approach.
He commented, “I think, probably, there should be more regulation, frankly. I wish there was federal legislation rather than state by state. You’ve got to keep an eye on the amount of promotion and advertising surrounding these activities.”
The Department of Justice has flagged seven NBA games during which substantial wagers were placed following the disclosure of nonpublic information to gamblers.
One of the key incidents involved Rozier, who allegedly tipped his childhood friend Deniro Laster that he intended to exit a game early on March 23, 2023, under the guise of an injury. This insider knowledge allowed Laster to make wagers based on Rozier’s confidential information. Notably, neither team officials nor betting venues were privy to this scheme, and Rozier did not appear on the injury report.
This information was reportedly sold to multiple co-conspirators, leading to bets accumulating around $200,000 on Rozier’s performance to
