Three former players from Eastern Michigan University’s men’s basketball team have declined to cooperate with the NCAA’s investigation into potential sports betting violations, the governing body of college athletics announced on Friday. This investigation encompasses several games from the upcoming 2024-25 season.
In January, the NCAA conducted an examination of the personal phones belonging to Jalin Billingsley, Da’Sean Nelson, and Jalen Terry, prompted by unusual betting activities linked to a game between Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan on January 14.
The players opted not to participate in interviews and later conveyed through their legal counsel that they would not cooperate with the ongoing investigation. They also requested the deletion of the images taken from their phones.
The refusal to cooperate with the NCAA constitutes a violation that may result in severe repercussions, including the potential loss of eligibility to participate in college athletics. However, since all three players have exhausted their NCAA eligibility, the direct penalty may not affect their playing status.
The NCAA emphasized that the lack of cooperation has hindered their investigation. As enforcement personnel are unable to ascertain whether any sports gambling violations have occurred, the uncertainty complicates the situation. An official from the Division I Committee on Infractions stated, “When individuals choose not to cooperate — particularly when cases involve potential integrity issues — those choices can and will be met with serious consequences including prohibitions on athletically related activities and/or being publicly named in an infractions decision.”
At present, the NCAA is investigating a total of 13 athletes across six different schools for alleged sports wagering violations, reflecting a wider concern in college athletics regarding the integrity of sports.
Jalen Terry has been a standout player for Eastern Michigan, averaging 16.6 points per game, leading the team in scoring during the 2024-25 season. Da’Sean Nelson, who joined Eastern Michigan after transferring from DePaul, averaged 16.1 points per game last season. Recently, Nelson signed a contract to play with Fribourg Olympic Basket in the Swiss Basketball League.
The NCAA’s scrutiny of these players reflects an increasing awareness and concern about the influence of sports betting on college athletics. As the legalization of sports betting expands across the United States, the implications for student-athletes create critical challenges for institutions and the NCAA alike.
While the focus has been on these three individuals, a larger context emerges involving the entire collegiate sports landscape. As gambling continues to intertwine with sports, the NCAA faces growing pressure to establish comprehensive guidelines that protect the integrity of the games and the athletes who participate in them.
Furthermore, as the intersection of sports and betting becomes more prevalent, institutions must be vigilant about compliance and the ethical responsibilities of their athletes. The current events surrounding Eastern Michigan not only highlight individual concerns but also raise significant questions about governance in college sports.
The NCAA’s ongoing investigations signal a serious commitment to safeguarding the integrity of collegiate athletics in the wake of burgeoning gambling activities. Increased vigilance and transparency will be essential as colleges and universities navigate this complex issue. As sports betting culture continues to evolve, both student-athletes and institutions must adapt, preparing for a future where ethics in sports remain a paramount concern.
Fox News Digital has attempted to reach Jalen Terry, Da’Sean Nelson, and Jalin Billingsley for comments regarding their situations, but none were available for response as of Friday.
