The NCAA faced intensified pressure on Tuesday to adopt gender testing protocols for athletes competing in women’s sports. This call for action follows a recent decision by World Athletics to implement cheek-swab tests aimed at ensuring fair competition.
World Athletics president Sebastian Coe announced that these tests would be utilized for any athlete seeking to compete in the female category. He characterized the testing procedure as straightforward and expressed his commitment to maintaining fairness in women’s sports as a key priority.
Coe emphasized that these tests are not invasive, reaffirming his readiness to address any potential criticism surrounding their implementation.
Advocates for women’s sports equity are pushing the NCAA to align its policies with those now in place at World Athletics. Coe has shown a strong stance on safeguarding women’s sports.
“Neither of these are invasive. They are necessary, and they will be conducted to international medical standards,” Coe stated during a media availability. “I embarked on this path to protect the female category in sport in 2016 and 2017, fully prepared to meet the challenges head-on.”
