NorthShore Classical Academy is set to establish a chapter of Turning Point USA prior to its official opening in September 2026. This initiative reflects a growing trend among educational institutions that support conservative values.
Cheryle Rebholz, the president of NorthShore Classical Academy, confirmed the establishment of the club in a recent interview. She expressed enthusiasm for joining the Turning Point USA movement early on, stating, “We are confirming that we are an American club division of Turning Point USA. It’s a high school club. And back in March, we confirmed that we want to be a part of this movement. And we’re not even open yet.”
In the aftermath of the tragic death of Charlie Kirk, TPUSA has seen a surge in interest, with over 120,000 inquiries received from individuals interested in starting new campus chapters. Kirk’s assassination while speaking at Utah Valley University has propelled the organization into the national spotlight, fostering increased support across various communities.
NCA’s commitment to aligning with TPUSA comes at a significant time. Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, now serves as CEO and chair of TPUSA’s board and oversees approximately 1,200 high school chapters and 900 college chapters nationwide. NCA, a member of Hillsdale Curriculum Schools, aims to follow in the footsteps of this organization, further expanding its reach and influence.
The classical education model implemented at NorthShore emphasizes not just academic achievement but also moral and civic virtue. This aligns with Hillsdale College’s objectives, as stated on their official website. NCA stands out as the first private classical Hillsdale high school, according to President Rebholz.
Rebholz explained, “You have to apply and then go through the process of an application, and they vet you. And I wanted to, because of their strong civics, their strong philosophy, to restore excellence, rigor and to stretch our young adults in high school.”
This announcement from NCA follows a recent controversy at another Hillsdale-affiliated institution. Lake Country Classical Academy had rejected a student’s request to establish a TPUSA chapter, eliciting strong reactions from notable figures including former Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker. In response to the backlash, LCCA is now exploring the formation of a similar club, albeit under different parameters.
Principal Margaret Hagedorn of LCCA indicated that the school would create a civics club instead of a TPUSA chapter. She noted, “We clarified our fidelity to Hillsdale’s model and curriculum,” emphasizing the importance of adhering to their existing policies. Since its inception, LCCA has not approved any student clubs affiliated with external political or religious organizations, aligning with Hillsdale’s guidance.
The move to create a civics club at LCCA has sparked criticism, particularly from those who viewed the initial rejection as a failure to acknowledge student initiatives. Brett Galaszewski, National Enterprise Director of Turning Point Action, criticized LCCA for their decision, while simultaneously praising NCA for their proactive approach in establishing a TPUSA chapter.
Many parents and critics had voiced their frustrations regarding LCCA’s rejection of the TPUSA club, asserting that it limited student expression and engagement. Walker, who holds an honorary position on LCCA’s board, supported the establishment of the TPUSA chapter, calling it a critical opportunity for students.
As NCA prepares for its opening, students will have the chance to engage in TPUSA’s “Club America” initiative. This program encourages high school chapters to meet bi-monthly and create a platform for conservative students to express their ideas and values. Various activities, including hosting local, state, and federal candidates, will play a vital role in fostering civic engagement.
Rebholz highlighted the importance of these gatherings, stating, “They will help run mock elections so they know what’s a partisan office and a non-partisan and hopefully, at the very end, when they graduate, they will register to vote and be great citizens.”
