The recent departure of Elon Musk from the Department of Government Efficiency has paved the way for significant changes in immigration and border security. These developments mark the beginning of a new chapter in a government initiative that aims to overhaul outdated systems.
Abigail Jackson, a representative for the White House, commented on the changes, stating, “DOGE has helped to transform the Federal government by eliminating waste and bloat that has been ignored for years. DOGE is playing a key role in eliminating millions of taxpayer dollars being misspent, including contracts for illegal alien facilities that sat empty during the Biden Border invasion and funding for hotel rooms to house illegal gang members. DOGE’s mission to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse continues!” This statement highlights the agency’s goal of improving government accountability.
In February, the Department of Homeland Security took decisive action by canceling an $83 million contract tied to an unused facility designated for illegal immigrants at the southern border. Additionally, they eliminated $80 million in FEMA funding intended for lodging illegal immigrants in locations such as New York City’s Roosevelt Hotel.Â
This was part of a broader mandate to streamline expenditures, with a particular focus on reducing financial waste in the immigration system. As a result, DOGE has been actively reassessing ongoing contracts to ensure they align with current immigration policies.
In March, DOGE cleared a contract to resume construction of a seven-mile section of the border wall. On March 17, the DHS announced, “Secretary Noem announced that we officially awarded the first DOGE approved contract to restart construction on President Trump’s border wall.” This marked a major step in reinstating border security measures that had been stalled.
DOGE also unveiled disturbing findings regarding illegal immigrants receiving public benefits. An analysis revealed that many individuals identified on the FBI’s terror watchlist and those with criminal backgrounds were improperly accessing taxpayer-funded services. Reports indicated that four individuals from the watchlist and 901 other ‘paroled aliens’ collected Medicaid and other benefits, costing taxpayers substantially.
For 2024, the department calculated the total expenses of tax refunds, Medicaid, and student loans for these individuals amounted to over $1.3 million. This is emblematic of the inefficiencies that the current administration aims to address.
The DHS has made it clear that it intends to confront wasteful practices in various sectors. For example, the Coast Guard announced a projected savings of $32.7 million by abolishing an ineffective IT program. In May, officials confirmed that these funds would be redirected to enhance frontline operations, demonstrating a proactive approach to resource management.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem praised these changes, stating, “Another win for government efficiency at DHS!” Her remarks reflect the department’s commitment to optimizing its budget while ensuring enhanced security measures are in place.
Moreover, DHS and the Department of Housing and Urban Development have initiated a crackdown targeting illegal immigrants who exploit public housing benefits. This initiative is part of a larger strategy aimed at tightening regulations surrounding public aid.
Recently, the DHS announced the termination of FEMA’s Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities program following an evaluation that deemed it ineffective. A FEMA spokesperson stated, “The BRIC program was yet another example of a wasteful and ineffective FEMA initiative. It was more concerned with political agendas than helping Americans affected by natural disasters.” This statement reinforces the objective to refocus resources on those genuinely in need.
Fox News sought additional commentary from the DHS regarding these changes. They are coinciding with President Donald Trump’s unprecedented policy shifts early in his second term, resulting in notable decreases in border encounters. Furthermore, the crackdown on illegal immigrants with criminal records remains a focal point of this administration’s agenda.
Since its inception, DOGE has touted an estimated savings of $175 billion for taxpayers. These figures underscore the agency’s effectiveness in addressing expenditures that have historically gone unchecked.
As the government transitions into this new phase without Musk, it remains to be seen how these ongoing reforms will reshape the landscape of immigration policy and border security. The efficacy of these measures will likely influence public sentiment and the future direction of the administration’s policies in these critical areas.
