New Forensic Evidence Sparks Renewed Hope in Search for Missing Geologist Son

A retired U.S. Army veteran is on a determined quest for the truth regarding his missing son, a geologist, who disappeared from a work site in Arizona over four years ago. Recent advancements in forensic technology may finally provide the answers the family has desperately sought as investigators aim to break open this enduring cold case.

The Disappearance of Daniel Robinson

Daniel Robinson, 24, was reported missing on June 23, 2021, after he left work around 9 a.m., according to the Buckeye Police Department. His father, David Robinson, learned of his son’s disappearance later that day when coworkers informed him that Daniel had not returned to work.

David shared his initial frustrations with law enforcement, recounting, “When I first called in, [authorities] made me hang the phone up, wait two hours and call back.” This lack of urgency would soon prompt David to take action into his own hands.

A Father’s Relentless Search

After being advised by local authorities that they would not initiate a search due to Daniel’s age, David made the long journey from his home in Columbia, South Carolina, to Arizona. This trip spanned over 2,000 miles.

“I kind of lost it,” David recalled. “That prompted me to grab everything I could, throw it in my car and start driving to go find Daniel myself.” Upon his arrival, David felt overwhelmed by the perceived inaction of the officials, leading him to hire a private investigator for assistance.

The Discovery of Daniel’s Vehicle

Within a month of David’s arrival, his son’s 2017 Jeep Renegade was found overturned in a ravine by a local rancher. Key evidence raised serious questions about Daniel’s disappearance. The vehicle remained in drive despite appearing damaged, with a broken driver’s side window and a missing roof piece.

Authorities, however, ruled out foul play in Daniel’s disappearance. “Law enforcement gave me an idea of what they said happened at that scene,” David explained. “It was unacceptable to me. It didn’t make sense.” Despite the investigation, a lack of definitive answers continued to haunt the family.

Evidence Suggests Possible Foul Play

David Robinson’s private investigator discovered discrepancies in the evidence related to the vehicle. The damage did not align with the surrounding terrain, and data from the black box indicated the car had traveled 11 miles after the airbags deployed, suggesting it might have been placed at the scene after the incident.

“So all of the information – plus more – signified to my investigator that some type of foul play happened,” David asserted. This conclusion only intensified David’s search for answers.

A Father’s Resilience Amid Adversity

As David pursued leads and conducted searches, local law enforcement offered multiple explanations regarding Daniel’s fate, which added to his sense of frustration. “When [police] said, ‘Hey, your son joined the monastery and became a monk,’ I had to go look for monasteries,” he remembered. “Can you imagine that? I had to go and check that out. [It was] a waste of a lot of money, a lot of energy.”

Despite the case remaining open, David was unwavering in his mission. He received a statement from the Buckeye Police Department, confirming their commitment to finding Daniel and welcoming any tips from the public.

New Developments Offer Fresh Optimism

After four long years, the introduction of new detectives and a new police chief has generated renewed hope for David. He stated, “It’s given me the opportunity to get new leads in Daniel’s case. Hopefully that’s what we’ll find. Because I know forensic work will bring on some new answers, and we can go forward in another direction to find out exactly what happened to my family.”

David remains optimistic that new forensic data derived from clothing and the vehicle can piece together what transpired during his son’s last moments. In the meantime, he continues to search the desert on foot for clues.

The Power of Community Support

Through this heartbreaking journey, David has built a supportive network with volunteers who search tirelessly alongside him. “Me and the volunteers that come out, they are my extended family,” he said. “We’re actually looking for Daniel.”

Additionally, David’s relentless efforts have led him to assist others. While searching for Daniel, he has helped recover seven sets of human remains, providing closure for other families with missing loved ones.

Finding Strength in Shared Pain

In April, David connected with another father who shares a similar heartbreak: Joseph Petito, whose daughter Gabby went missing shortly after Daniel. The two fathers formed a bond over their experiences, with Petito participating in the search efforts for Daniel in Arizona.

Joseph noted the importance of this collaboration, emphasizing, “I really pray for him and his family.” The fortitude shared between the two families highlights the deep emotional weight of their journeys.

Advocacy for Missing Persons

David Robinson’s commitment goes beyond finding his son. He actively advocates for missing persons across the nation. He is working on proposed legislation to establish federal standards concerning law enforcement’s responses to reports of missing individuals, even as he campaigns for a congressional seat in South Carolina’s Second District.

“The only thing that kept me straight is my love for my son and my military training,” David expressed. “I had to rely on military training to look at my son as a mission, and I put the mission first.”Â
