Senator John Cornyn, a Republican from Texas, plans to introduce the Law Enforcement Tools to Interdict Troubling Investments in Abodes Act, or LETITIA Act. This bill seeks to impose harsher penalties on public officials involved in federal bank fraud, tax fraud, or any form of mortgage fraud. The bill’s introduction coincides with recent allegations of mortgage fraud against prominent officials, including high-profile lawmakers.
Earlier this year, a federal housing official lodged a criminal referral against New York Attorney General Letitia James concerning potential mortgage fraud spanning her professional dealings.

The Department of Justice has initiated an investigation into James, following her civil victory against former President Donald Trump and his organization over accusations of deceptive business practices.
