Incoming chair of the National Governors Association, Governor Kevin Stitt of Oklahoma, has voiced his disappointment regarding certain Democratic governors who may halt their dues to the bipartisan organization. This move stems from frustrations related to the NGA’s relationship with the Trump administration.
According to reports prior to the NGA’s summer meeting in Colorado Springs, two Democratic leaders, Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota and Governor Laura Kelly of Kansas, have indicated they might not pay their dues during the upcoming renewal period. Their stance reflects broader concerns over the NGA’s approach to issues arising during President Donald Trump’s tenure.
In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, Stitt emphasized that politics should not infiltrate the collaborative environment of the NGA. He stated, “We shouldn’t be playing politics like they do in Washington, D.C. But sometimes, if you’re a governor running for president or a higher office, you make it political.” His comments underline the delicate balance between governance and political ambitions.
Central to the discord is Governor Kelly’s position as the chair of the Democratic Governors Association, a group frequently critical of Trump. Meanwhile, Walz, who is contemplating a third gubernatorial campaign, has consistently opposed Trump’s administration since losing the vice presidency alongside Kamala Harris.
This discontent surfaces as Governor Jared Polis of Colorado prepares to transfer the chairmanship to Stitt during the weekend’s summer meeting. Governor Wes Moore of Maryland is slated to assume the vice chair role, signifying a shift in leadership dynamics within the NGA.
Stitt remarked, saying, “I would tell anybody, listen, do you want your leaders to take their ball and go home just because they get mad at something? That’s not the way to solve problems.” These remarks reflect his belief that collaboration is essential, especially at a time when political divisions are pronounced.
The Oklahoma governor acknowledged the political frustrations stemming from ongoing criticisms of Trump, yet he added, “there are plenty of instances in which governors can find common ground.” He specifically pointed to pressing national issues, such as addressing the United States’ significant national debt exceeding 36 trillion dollars.
Ahead of the summer meeting, NGA communications director Eric Wohlschlegel reiterated the organization’s commitment to its bipartisan mission. He affirmed to Fox News Digital that the NGA’s mission has remained unchanged despite the political climate.
Reports indicate that Democratic members of the NGA expressed dissatisfaction, claiming that the association did not respond assertively enough when the Trump administration suspended federal funding earlier in the year. Conflicts arose particularly around issues involving biological males participating in women’s sports.
Wohlschlegel clarified, stating, “Every public statement NGA issues reflects bipartisan consensus. This year, all but one statement has had that consensus, and when governors don’t agree, we simply don’t issue one. That’s how we preserve our role as a bipartisan convener, a principle we won’t compromise.” This statement aims to highlight the NGA’s goal of maintaining an unbiased platform for discussion.
This summer meeting will see participation from thirteen Republican governors alongside seven Democratic leaders, featuring dialogues with prominent officials like Education Secretary Linda McMahon and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
A source familiar with the unfolding situation attributed the controversy to ongoing Democratic infighting, potential campaign maneuvering, and a handful of anonymous voices pushing to transform a nonpartisan entity into a political tool.
Despite the ongoing tensions, a source noted that no governors have publicly expressed discontent with the NGA. There have been no allegations of mismanagement or governance failures within the organization.
While declining to directly address the controversy, a spokesperson for Governor Polis emphasized that Polis has been honored to lead the NGA. He has strived to collaborate with colleagues across party lines on significant initiatives such as education reforms and protecting gubernatorial authority amid evolving federal policies.
The spokesperson also asserted that during this politically charged era, organizations like the NGA are more crucial than ever. The NGA must continue offering value to all governors and facilitate meaningful discussions with both the public and the federal government.
Abegail Cave, a spokesperson for Stitt, reiterated that the NGA is fundamentally a bipartisan organization, not a political entity. This perspective challenges the notion of using the association for partisan gain, reinforcing the need for governors to collaborate regardless of party lines.
Fox News Digital reached out to Governors Walz and Kelly for their statements but did not receive an immediate response. As the NGA approaches its summer meeting, the discussions surrounding these political dynamics suggest the necessity for a renewed focus on cooperation amid mounting pressures from both political parties.
