FIRST ON FOX: In a fierce push against the ongoing government shutdown, Republicans from New York’s congressional delegation are demanding action from Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, both Democrats. They are urging the senators to take decisive steps to resolve the funding impasse, labeling their rejection of the GOP-backed funding bill as detrimental to the people of New York.
The government shutdown plunged into its eleventh day, with no resolution in sight between Republicans and Democrats. In an open letter, seven House Republicans admonished Schumer and Gillibrand, stating, “You have abdicated your responsibility to New Yorkers. By consistently voting against the clean Continuing Resolution, you have effectively shut down the government without any willingness to restore its operations.”
The letter highlighted the senators’ past support for clean Continuing Resolutions, which are typically used to keep the government operational while Congress negotiates longer-term bipartisan funding solutions.
The Republicans accused Schumer and Gillibrand of shifting their stance out of spite towards former President Trump and congressional Republicans, which they deemed a disservice to the nation. They pointed out, “Both of you have previously expressed strong opposition to government shutdowns and their harmful impacts on American citizens.”
Leading the charge, Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., signed the letter alongside six House colleagues representing various regions of New York, including Reps. Nick Langworthy, Nicole Malliotakis, Claudia Tenney, Nick LaLota, Elise Stefanik, and Andrew Garbarino.
Recent history shows that the House passed a measure aimed at maintaining government funding through November 21. This bill, titled Continuing Resolution, garnered support mainly along party lines back on September 19.
However, Democrats in both the House and Senate expressed frustration over their exclusion from negotiations regarding federal funding. They are now insisting that any spending agreement includes an extension of enhanced Obamacare subsidies, which are set to expire at the end of this year.
Democrats argue that neglecting to address these subsidies could lead to an increase in healthcare premiums for millions of Americans by year’s end.
While Republican leaders in Congress are open to discussions about these subsidies, they insist that the Continuing Resolution must remain free of any additional policy changes. The goal of these resolutions is to afford lawmakers more time to work toward a comprehensive funding agreement for fiscal year 2026, which commenced on October 1.
Chuck Schumer has faced significant pressure from the left to resist the GOP’s proposed plan, especially since his vote helped propel the same bill forward in March, which extended federal funding levels through September 30, 2024.
In response to past remarks by Schumer, the House Republicans’ letter stated, “Just last year, you mentioned that no rational member of Congress wants a government shutdown. Your current position is unreasonable, Senator.”
Despite efforts, the Continuing Resolution has been blocked in the Senate on seven occasions. The latest numbers indicate that the support of five additional Democrats is needed to overcome the filibuster and move towards a final vote.
