The New York Times has drawn a provocative comparison between the Republican Party’s efforts to slash federal funding for public news stations and radical left-wing movements advocating to defund the police and abolish ICE. In a recent editorial, the liberal editorial board criticized conservatives for their attempts to defund NPR and PBS, deeming such actions excessive and unfounded.
On Wednesday, the Times editorial board highlighted how these funding cuts mirror past movements that sought to eliminate fundamental government services. They stated, “We are reminded of the excesses of the ‘defund the police’ and ‘abolish ICE’ movements on the other side of the ideological spectrum. They adopted a fatalistic view of vital government services, suggesting their imperfections justified their elimination. They were wrong, and so are the conservatives who want to defund public media.”
This editorial gained prominence on the same day as the U.S. Senate prepared for a crucial vote on President Donald Trump’s $9 billion rescission package.
