Researchers have made an exciting discovery of a new species of glowing sea slug residing deep in the ocean’s midnight zone. This finding sheds light on the diverse and mysterious ecosystem situated at depths rarely explored.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) scientists announced their groundbreaking discovery of Bathydevius caudactylus in a recent press release. This extraordinary sea slug, nicknamed the “mystery mollusk,” stands out due to its unique features that have never been observed before.

Characteristics of the Mystery Mollusk

The genus name, Bathydevius, cleverly signifies the animal’s elusive nature, which has evaded scientific understanding until now. Unlike any other known nudibranchs, Bathydevius thrives in the deep sea, showcasing a remarkable gelatinous body adorned with a large hood and a paddle-like tail. Most intriguingly, this sea slug possesses the fascinating ability to glow through bioluminescence.

This newly identified species inhabits depths ranging from 1,000 to 4,000 meters (about 3,300 to 13,100 feet) beneath the ocean’s surface. Such extreme depths present significant challenges for researchers dedicated to cataloging this enigmatic creature.

“We’ve invested more than 20 years in understanding the natural history of this fascinating species of nudibranch,” stated MBARI Senior Scientist Bruce Robison. He emphasized that this discovery is a vital piece in unraveling the complexities of the largest habitat on Earth.

Researchers have found that Bathydevius employs unique survival strategies adapted to its dark and high-pressure environment. Its cavernous hood can trap unsuspecting crustaceans much like a Venus flytrap, showcasing an intriguing feeding mechanism. Additionally, the creature can remain hidden from predators through its transparent body, perfectly camouflaging it against the deep-sea backdrop.

Defense Mechanisms and Reproductive Strategies

In situations where it feels threatened, the mystery mollusk exhibits a remarkable defense mechanism. It can illuminate its body with bioluminescence, confusing and deterring potential predators. During one observation, researchers noted the creature releasing a glowing, finger-like projection from its tail, likely serving as a distraction in dangerous encounters.

Like various other nudibranchs, Bathydevius is hermaphroditic, containing both male and female reproductive organs. Upon reaching reproductive maturity, it descends to the seafloor to spawn. By anchoring itself to the muddy bottom using its muscular foot, it releases eggs, contributing to the continuation of its lineage.

“What excites me about the mystery mollusk is that it exemplifies how much we are learning as we venture deeper into the ocean, particularly below 2,000 meters,” explained MBARI Senior Scientist Steven Haddock. He pointed out that the presence of such a large, unique, and bioluminescent creature, belonging to a previously undiscovered family, highlights the importance of utilizing innovative technology to explore our oceans further.
