His emotional remarks came during an interview on NBC ahead of the NFL Hall of Fame Game, which marks the beginning of the 2025 season in Canton, Ohio.

During the interview with Mike Tirico, Goodell condemned the incident, labeling it a “senseless” act of violence. He shared that one NFL employee sustained serious injuries in the attack.

Goodell stated, “There are no excuses for these senseless acts. They are difficult for all of us to comprehend. They inflict pain on people we know, care about, and interact with daily. This reality makes it particularly challenging to accept such loss.”

Goodell acknowledged the unfortunate reality of violence in today’s society, stating that similar tragedies occur far too often. He highlighted the prevalence of acts of hatred and violence across various settings, including schools and places of worship. Today was an emotionally challenging experience, but the service celebrated his life beautifully.”

Regarding the NFL employee injured in the shooting, Goodell shared positive news about the individual’s recovery. He mentioned visiting with the young man, who is now in a stable condition and surrounded by loved ones.

Goodell remarked, “He is an incredible young man, and we remain optimistic about his recovery. Our hearts are with his family during this challenging time.”

New York City Mayor Eric Adams informed the public that the shooter, Shane Tamura, specifically targeted the NFL during the attack. Tamura expressed grievances related to his mental and physical health, linking them to his career in football. He believed he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a condition caused by repeated head injuries.

After the incident, Goodell made sure to keep communication open with all league employees. He urgently notified them of the unfortunate situation and subsequently arranged for all New York City-based staff members to work remotely for the following week.
