A Nicaraguan man living in the United States without legal status is facing serious charges after a drunken hit-and-run incident in Florida. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office confirmed this troubling event occurred over the weekend.
Roberto Sandobal-Lopez, 34, was arrested on Saturday evening after he allegedly crashed his white Honda into a residential fence in Winter Haven shortly before 7 p.m. Witnesses reported the crash, prompting deputies to respond quickly to the scene.
Deputies located Sandobal-Lopez in the vicinity shortly after the accident. Upon approach, they noticed he exhibited signs of intoxication. Authorities described his eyes as “watery” and “bloodshot,” and they detected a strong smell of alcohol emanating from him.
When questioned about his drinking, Sandobal-Lopez claimed to have consumed six bottles of Modelo a few hours prior to the incident. Breathalyzer tests indicated alcohol concentration levels of 0.13 and 0.124. The sheriff’s office stated that field sobriety tests presented several signs of impairment.
Following his arrest, Sandobal-Lopez was booked into the Polk County Jail. He now faces multiple charges, including DUI with property damage, driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, and operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s license.
Authorities enhanced his charges due to his illegal immigration status. Specifically, the charge of “DUI with property damage” was elevated to a third-degree felony, while the remaining charges were classified as first-degree misdemeanors.
Sheriff Grady Judd addressed the situation in a Facebook post, emphasizing the serious nature of Sandobal-Lopez’s actions. He noted that the man will remain in custody until U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement takes custody of him.
Judd highlighted the fortunate outcome of the incident, stating that only property was damaged and no individuals were injured during the reckless driving. Describing Sandobal-Lopez’s decision to abandon the scene as cowardly, Judd underscored the need for individuals to accept responsibility for their actions.
The sheriff elaborated on the legal consequences related to immigration status in Florida. In this state, being undocumented can have significant implications for criminal charges. Judd noted that individuals who commit crimes while being in Florida illegally may face enhanced penalties.
He stated, “In Florida, if you’re committing the crime of being here illegally, your other criminal charges are enhanced one degree. He is now facing a serious felony because he caused damage to property while driving under the influence.” This critical point illustrates how immigration status can complicate legal proceedings for individuals involved in criminal activities.
The incident has drawn attention from the community, raising discussions about the implications of illegal immigration and public safety. Various residents have expressed concerns regarding drunk driving incidents, particularly those involving individuals without legal status. Community members are calling for increased safety measures and stricter penalties for repeat offenders.
Some citizens argue that such cases should prompt law enforcement and lawmakers to reevaluate policies related to illegal immigration and driving privileges. They emphasize the importance of ensuring that all drivers on the road are properly licensed and accountable for their actions.
This case is not an isolated incident but reflects ongoing debates surrounding immigration policy and public safety in the United States. Many advocates argue for reforms that would allow undocumented immigrants to secure legal status and, consequently, driving privileges. Meanwhile, others stress the importance of enforcing existing laws to ensure that public safety remains a priority.
The investigation into this incident is still developing, and it will be crucial to monitor how the legal proceedings unfold for Sandobal-Lopez. As he faces serious charges, the case will likely attract further scrutiny from both law enforcement and immigration advocates.
Ultimately, this incident serves as a somber reminder of the potential risks associated with drunk driving and the heightened legal consequences individuals may face when they are also in violation of immigration laws. The intersection of public safety and immigration policy continues to be a challenging issue for Florida and the nation.
