Actress Nicole Eggert, known for her role in the popular series Baywatch, has provided her followers with an update as she courageously faces a challenging health battle. Eggert is currently grappling with a rare form of breast cancer and has recently shared details about her treatment journey.
On a recent Wednesday, the 53-year-old actress shared on Instagram that she underwent a mastectomy and reconstruction surgery. This procedure took place last Thursday as part of her treatment for stage II cribriform carcinoma, a type of breast cancer diagnosed in December 2023.
In her Instagram post, Eggert candidly stated, “Had a mastectomy with reconstruction on Thursday. How was ur weekend?” She included various hashtags, such as #breastcancer, #breastcancerawareness, and #feelyourselfup, along with tagging Dr. Kyle Song of South Coast Plastic Surgery, who played a crucial role in her surgical care.
The response from Eggert’s fans and co-stars was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing their support in the comments section. Eggert first disclosed her breast cancer diagnosis in a January 2024 interview with a major publication. She explained how she initially mistook the symptoms for menopause, experiencing pain in her left breast and significant weight gain of 25 pounds over three months.
In October, a self-exam led her to discover a lump that changed everything. After seeking medical advice, specialists diagnosed her with stage II cribriform carcinoma breast cancer shortly after.
The Cleveland Clinic reports that most cases of cribriform carcinoma are estrogen receptor-positive, indicating that high levels of estrogen can promote the growth and spread of cancer cells.
Following her diagnosis, Eggert underwent an initial mastectomy and lymph node removal. She completed chemotherapy successfully by July 2024, followed by radiation therapy as part of her treatment plan.
In a December 2024 interview, Eggert revealed her decision to proceed with a second mastectomy and breast reconstruction. This step marked another phase in her extensive treatment plan.
After these surgeries, Eggert faces the choice of either undergoing a hysterectomy or embarking on hormone therapy. This therapy includes monthly injections of an estrogen blocker for a decade, alongside two oral medications to be taken for the next five years.
There are significant challenges with these medical procedures, as Eggert elaborated on the complexities of recovery. She stated, “There’s a lot that goes into this.” Reflecting on the mastectomy experience, she mentioned how unexpected physical sensations arose during recovery. “The mastectomy is strange. I kind of went into it thinking they were just going to remove the breast tissue and you recover from stitches and scars. But there’s so much more to it, because they cut through many nerves. So, that sensation and getting used to that is very bizarre,” she explained.
Eggert continued, sharing the pain associated with lymph node removal. “Much more complicated and affects the body much more. So, I wasn’t really prepared for that because they didn’t mention that they removed lymph nodes,” she noted, emphasizing the journey of discovery she undertook throughout her treatment.
In a move to help process her experiences, Eggert shared a video centered on grief from grief educator and coach P. Paula Griffith. In the accompanying caption, she included an insightful quote from First Lady Martha Washington: “The greater part of our happiness or misery depends on our dispositions and not on our circumstances.”
