When Nicole Eggert joined the world-renowned television series Baywatch in 1992, she embarked on a journey that would shape her life and career in unexpected ways.
On a recent episode of the Still Here Hollywood podcast, Eggert candidly discussed her experiences as Roberta ‘Summer’ Quinn, highlighting the impact the show had on both her professional journey and personal life.
Initially, Eggert was set to star in a spin-off series with a premise similar to Beverly Hills 90210 but set on the beach. She explained that the concept revolved around a high school focused on lifeguard training. However, with Baywatch’s rapid rise in popularity, the spin-off was shelved. “They were like, ‘Spin-off nothing. This is what’s working, and we want it to stay like this,'” Eggert recalled.
After two seasons on Baywatch, Eggert decided to “politely bow out,” feeling that the show had veered away from her expectations. “I had this notion that if I left, I would be able to detach myself from the stigma that the show created for all of us as actors. Unfortunately, that proved to be untrue,” she stated.
The stigma associated with Baywatch took a toll on Eggert’s dating life. The actress explained, “People have a set idea of who you are based on your roles, and that influences how they perceive you. It can make it challenging for someone to truly get to know you without those preconceived notions.” This disconnect has been a recurring theme in her relationships.
Reflecting on her time on the show, Eggert expressed that she feels she is vastly different from the characters she portrayed, which sometimes led to misunderstandings in her dating life.
During her conversation with podcast host Steve Kmetko, Eggert described her time on Baywatch as “weird,” given the intense scrutiny from the media. “We were often torn apart in the press,” she noted. The negative portrayal limited her opportunities, as she found herself labeled and reduced to trivial stereotypes.
“The media referred to us as ‘Baywatch bimbos,’ emphasizing the superficial aspects of the show. It felt disheartening to be recognized for something so shallow while simultaneously being part of a number one hit television series,” she shared.
In 2003, Eggert made a return to the Baywatch franchise with Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding. In her subsequent interviews, she reflected on her initial naivety about joining the Baywatch cast. “Oh my God, we’re going to be in a bathing suit all day every day?” she thought on her first day. The physical demands and expectations of fitting into the iconic red swimsuit were overwhelming.
As she looked around, Eggert noticed that her co-stars maintained rigorous fitness regimens, making her feel out of place. She described those one-piece bathing suits as unflattering; her experience did not align with the glamor often portrayed on screen.
During her time away from the show, Eggert, at just 18 years old, made the impulsive decision to undergo breast augmentation surgery. Now, she views it as a regrettable choice, acknowledging that she allowed the pressures of external expectations to influence her body image decisions. “I look at younger girls undergoing similar procedures and think, ‘Just leave your bodies alone!’,” she lamented.
Over the years, Eggert underwent multiple breast surgeries, including a reduction featured on the television show Botched in 2015. As she reflected on her past choices, she emphasized the importance of self-acceptance over societal pressures.
In January 2024, Eggert disclosed her diagnosis of breast cancer, which added another layer of complexity to her journey. She began experiencing symptoms that she initially attributed to menopause but later discovered were linked to a significant health issue. During a routine self-exam, she found a lump in her breast, which ultimately led to her diagnosis of stage 2 cribriform carcinoma.
Eggert described finding the lump as alarming, admitting she felt discomfort and pain. She quickly sought medical advice but faced delays in securing an appointment until late November 2023. The results confirmed her fears, and both of her parents’ previous experiences with cancer added emotional weight to her situation.
As Eggert navigates the health challenges ahead, she also reflects on her longstanding career in the entertainment industry. Her experiences on Baywatch, while complex, served as pivotal moments that shaped her resilience and character. Looking back, she recognizes the lessons learned throughout her journey.
Through fame, scrutiny, and personal struggles, Nicole Eggert’s story is one of growth and perseverance. Moving forward, she remains hopeful and determined to embrace whatever the future holds.
