A federal grand jury has indicted Anthony Emmanuel Labrador Sierra, a 24-year-old undocumented immigrant from Venezuela, on multiple gun-related charges. Living in Perrysburg, Ohio, Labrador Sierra allegedly enrolled in high school by claiming to be a teenager until last month.
This indictment, issued by the grand jury this week, includes serious accusations. The charges against Labrador Sierra involve illegal possession of a firearm, making false statements during the firearm purchase process, and the use of fraudulent documentation, as stated in a recent news release from the Department of Justice.
The indictment presents a troubling picture of the suspect’s actions. Authorities allege that Labrador Sierra provided a false date of birth to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in applications submitted to secure Temporary Protected Status and Employment Authorization Documents for the years 2024 and 2025.
Additionally, he reportedly possessed a Taurus G3C 9mm semiautomatic pistol, an illegal act given his immigration status. Prosecutors assert that he misled the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to execute the purchase of the firearm.
If found guilty, Labrador Sierra faces severe penalties. He could receive a prison sentence of up to 15 years for possessing a firearm as an undocumented immigrant. Other potential sentences include 10 years for false statements made during the firearm transaction and up to five years for using fraudulent documents.
Prior to the current indictment, Labrador Sierra faced charges of forgery after allegedly enrolling in a public high school using phony documents. This situation has raised numerous questions about how he managed to gain admission to the educational institution.
The Perrysburg Police Department contacted by local school officials regarding potential fraudulent activities concerning one of their students initiated further investigations. This led to an established fraud case handed to detectives for more in-depth inquiry.
Detectives collaborated with U.S. Customs and Border Protection along with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Their efforts uncovered that Labrador Sierra was actually a 24-year-old individual from Venezuela. They also determined that he enrolled in Perrysburg Schools while posing as a 16-year-old.
Perrysburg School officials confirmed that under federal and state regulations regarding students experiencing homelessness or lacking legal guardians, Labrador Sierra enrolled in Perrysburg High School using the identity of an unaccompanied minor on January 11, 2024. This action illustrates a significant loophole in the school’s registration process.
From January 11, 2024, to May 14, 2025, he successfully acquired various forms of documentation, a situation that complicated the investigation significantly. Notably, he obtained a state-issued driver’s license, social security number, and Temporary Protective Status from U.S. Immigration.
The school reported that he assisted in completing a visa application with the help of Advocating Opportunities, an organization offering free legal services. This assistance may have contributed to his ability to maintain the facade of a minor.
The guardianship of Labrador Sierra was granted to a family in Perrysburg by the Wood County Juvenile Court. On May 14, school officials were alerted by the guardians, who received information suggesting that Labrador Sierra was, in fact, a 24-year-old adult rather than a minor.
During a meeting with district administrators on May 15, he reportedly denied these allegations. However, the rising scrutiny led to his arrest shortly afterward.
In a statement following his arrest, the school district highlighted that Labrador Sierra had participated actively in school sports. He was a member of both the junior varsity soccer and swim teams, which raises additional concerns over the impact of his actions on the team dynamics and responsibilities towards minors around him.
Labrador Sierra was apprehended during a traffic stop on Interstate 75 on Tuesday. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that they had tracked his information under an alternate spelling of his name. It was later verified that Labrador Sierra is a visa overstay who arrived in the U.S. in 2019.
Additionally, the DHS confirmed that he had successfully acquired Temporary Protected Status.
This case emphasizes the vulnerabilities within school enrollment procedures. It raises critical questions about how institutions verify the ages and identities of students, especially regarding those presenting as unaccompanied minors. As such incidents highlight flaws in immigration and schooling processes, discussions around enhancing accountability within educational frameworks are becoming imperative.
