FIRST ON FOX: The race for the Oklahoma governorship is heating up as the 2026 midterm elections approach. A super PAC supporting Oklahoma House Speaker Charles McCall has made headlines with a significant ad buy worth $1.6 million.
Beginning July 9, the Oklahoma Conservative Coalition will launch an ambitious eight-week advertising campaign across broadcast, cable, satellite, and streaming platforms statewide. This strategic investment aims to promote McCall’s candidacy ahead of the Republican primary.
Erinn Mahathey, spokesperson for the Oklahoma Conservative Coalition, emphasized McCall’s commitment to his conservative roots. She stated that McCall stands out as the sole America First candidate in the race, highlighting his proven track record in leadership. This investment marks the initial phase of McCall’s campaign efforts, aiming to build momentum as he strives to deliver meaningful results for the people of Oklahoma.
With less than a year until the Republican primary, several candidates are emerging as potential leaders in what is expected to be a competitive field. In this reliably Republican state, the primary winner is often viewed as the likely victor in the general election that follows in November.
Earlier this year, Charles McCall formally announced his candidacy for governor. He positions his campaign around a strong America First agenda, showcasing his collaboration with Governor Stitt and former President Trump to implement policies aimed at fostering a stronger Oklahoma.
Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond has also declared his candidacy, presenting a robust conservative platform. Drummond criticizes the current administration’s policies and claims to advocate for the state’s values against what he terms the Biden Administration’s overreach.
However, the McCall campaign has recently scrutinized Drummond for his past actions, including supporting John Waldron, the newly elected chair of the Oklahoma Democrat Party. Additionally, Drummond faced criticism for voting to delay the enforcement of a new law banning transgender surgery for minors while a federal lawsuit is pending.
Despite the criticism, Drummond maintains that his decision is strategic, stating it allows for adequate preparation in defending the state’s legal position. He argues that this agreement should not be misconstrued as an admission of defeat.
This summer, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a decision from the Oklahoma State Supreme Court regarding the funding of religious charter schools. The ruling determined that public funds could not be allocated to the St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School in Oklahoma City, marking a significant development in the ongoing conversation about educational funding and legislative authority.
Incumbent Governor Kevin Stitt finds himself in a contentious relationship with Drummond over various political issues, further complicating the dynamics within the Republican party. As Stitt approaches the end of his term, he continues to influence the political landscape in Oklahoma, serving as the vice chair of the National Governors Association.
This year, McCall’s campaign gained a notable endorsement from the Conservative Political Action Conference. His super PAC has begun highlighting his conservative policy initiatives as House Speaker, which include advocating for the protection of American farmland, expanding school choice, implementing tax cuts, and promoting pro-life legislation.
Other candidates in the race include Oklahoma House Representative Cyndi Munson, small business owner Leisa Mitchell Haynes, and former Oklahoma State Senator Mike Mazzei. Each candidate brings diverse perspectives and strategies to the campaign, promising an engaging and complex race ahead.
As the 2026 gubernatorial election approaches, the stakes are high for all candidates vying for the position. With a significant ad investment from McCall’s supporters, the landscape of the race is changing rapidly. Voters can expect an influx of campaign messages as candidates ramp up their efforts in the months ahead.
The race for governor will not only shape the future of Oklahoma but will also reflect broader national political trends. As candidates outline their visions and policies, the engagement from the electorate will be crucial.
As McCall and Drummond navigate their campaigns, the Republican primary will serve as a critical indicator of the party’s direction in Oklahoma. The outcome will likely hold implications beyond state lines, making this election one to watch closely.
