Oklahoma State University Students Seek Accountability After Harassment Incident

Student leaders from Young America’s Foundation at Oklahoma State University are taking a stand following a series of confrontations that resulted in their display being vandalized. In a series of alarming incidents, a single individual targeted their table, creating a hostile environment for conservative students. Fox News Digital engaged with YAF chairman Thomas Hatfield and vice chairman Caleb Buxton to discuss the details of this harassment, the university’s response, and their expectations for future actions from the administration.

Understanding the Incident

The Young America’s Foundation chapter was promoting traditional marriage at their table last week, aiming to foster constructive dialogue on campus. The trouble began when an individual approached them from a nearby anti-Israel table, visibly upset.

Buxton recounted the early moments of the confrontation, stating, “When they reached the sidewalk, they pushed through the crowd that had formed around our table and began snatching stickers and pins from our display. I followed them for about 50 yards to a nearby trash can, where they dumped all of our materials.” This initial encounter set the stage for repeated disruptions.

A Pattern of Aggression

Despite hoping the initial encounter was a one-time occurrence, Buxton and his peers soon discovered that the aggressor would return. “About 15 minutes later, the same individual reappeared, this time walking about three or four hundred yards from our table. I engaged in a brief discussion, but it quickly devolved into them labeling me a fascist and justifying their actions, claiming it was not theft because our materials weren’t valuable,” he explained.

Each return visit by the disruptor escalated the tension. During the third confrontation, Buxton found himself in a more extensive exchange. “I was called a fascist 16 times in that dialogue, with the individual insisting that fascists do not possess rights and that their opinions are worthless,” he noted.

The Impact of Hostility on Free Speech

Buxton expressed concern regarding the implications of using the term fascist so liberally. He argued, “This kind of rhetoric from the left creates a dangerous narrative, painting anyone on the right as deserving of aggression. If supporting Trump makes someone a fascist, that would inaccurately label a significant portion of the American populace. I find that troubling.”

After the fourth confrontation, where the aggressor again vandalized their table, Buxton stated the police were called. “The police arrived soon after, and we are currently pursuing charges against the individual involved in this harassment,” he added.

Demanding Accountability and Justice

The students are not only pursuing charges but also calling for further disciplinary measures from the university. Hatfield emphasized their commitment to achieving justice. “We will persist in our efforts until suitable action is taken not only for ourselves but for all students affected by free speech issues on campus. We aim to make it clear that harassment of this nature is unacceptable,” he said.

Buxton noted the disparity in the university’s response. He remarked, “If the roles were reversed, and this happened to a leftist organization, there would be immediate outreach and support for those students. Our situation, however, has not prompted any similar response from the administration.”

Continuing Their Mission

Despite the challenges they face, Young America’s Foundation at Oklahoma State University remains resolute in its mission. “We continue to advocate on social issues we believe in. We will push forward and maintain our positions regardless of the obstacles. Retreating in times of adversity isn’t an option,” Buxton affirmed.

Hatfield further called on their administration to commit to a safer campus environment. He urged Oklahoma State University to adopt a proposal known as the Contract for Safe Campus, developed by Young America’s Foundation. Hatfield stated, “We ask the university to sign this contract in earnest, ensuring that every student has a platform to share their views without fear of harassment, regardless of their political stance.”

The University’s Response

Oklahoma State University has publicly stated its support for free speech. In a recent communication, they reassured the community that the OSU Police Department is currently investigating the incident. A university spokesperson remarked, “Oklahoma State University endorses the rights of student organizations to express their opinions freely. Charges related to this situation are pending.”

While the university cannot disclose specifics due to privacy laws, they indicated that their student conduct team is actively reviewing the case and will address any breaches of the student code of conduct.

Fostering a Culture of Respect

The overarching sentiment among the YAF members is a desire for respect and acknowledgment of all viewpoints on campus. They believe that incidents like the one they experienced should not be tolerated and that every student has the right to express themselves without fear of retaliation or intimidation.

As Oklahoma State University navigates this matter, students and faculty alike are reminded of the responsibilities that come with free speech. The ongoing dialogue about campus expression and the protection of diverse viewpoints continues to be of utmost importance. Aggressive acts against any student group undermine the spirit of education and open discourse.

In the wake of these events, Young America’s Foundation members at OSU are determined to advocate tirelessly for their rights. They hope their situation serves as a catalyst for broader conversations about free speech and the treatment of differing ideologies on campuses nationwide.

Through their resilience and commitment, they seek not only justice for themselves but also a robust defense of the core values that underpin university life.
