Oneil Cruz’s Baseline Blunder Sparks Controversy in Pirates’ Recent Game

Pittsburgh Pirates star Oneil Cruz is facing scrutiny after a series of mistakes in recent games, raising questions about his focus and performance on the field.

Last week, Cruz’s lackadaisical effort following a passed ball in center field drew criticism. However, the situation escalated on Tuesday when he was taken out of the game after losing track of the number of outs.

Pirates manager Don Kelly made the decision to remove Cruz after he failed to hustle down the line on a double-play grounder against the Milwaukee Brewers. The play ended in a 6-4-3 double play, and Kelly expressed concerns about Cruz’s energy and effort.

Cruz, speaking through an interpreter, acknowledged Kelly’s decision and took responsibility for the blunder. He stated, “DK had all the rights to do what he did, and I’ll back him up on that. It was my fault because I thought there were two outs in that situation. That’s why I let off running to first base.”

After the game, manager Kelly reinforced his expectations to Cruz, highlighting the need for consistent effort on the field.

The 24-year-old Cruz has not only experienced blunders in the field but also struggled at the plate. In a recent game against the Texas Rangers, he notably misjudged a fly ball, allowing it to roll to the fence in the first inning.

Overall, Cruz’s batting average has plummeted as he has hit just .156 this month, racking up 31 strikeouts. His season statistics showcase a batting average of .211, an OPS of .736, and 13 home runs. Despite leading the National League with 26 stolen bases, he currently leads Major League Baseball with 101 strikeouts.

Manager Kelly addressed Cruz’s struggles, stating, “He’s struggling at the plate right now. It’s difficult when you’re going through that and trying to figure it out. He’s working hard to do that. We need to be mindful of not letting that offensive performance affect his defense and baserunning efforts. Energy and effort in every aspect of the game are crucial.”

Despite the setbacks, Cruz is determined to learn from his mistakes. He praised his opponents, remarking, “They’re a really good example. They always run hard. They always go out there to do their 100%. That’s a teaching point for me. I accepted the way DK came to me and explained it and presented it to me.”

Following their loss to the Brewers by a score of 9-3, the Pirates now hold a record of 32-48 this season. Since Kelly took over as manager, the team’s record has improved to 20-22, but challenges remain.

The road ahead for the Pirates and Cruz appears steep, yet the focus can shift to areas of improvement both individually and as a team.
