In April, officials announced that the death of Miller Gardner, the 14-year-old son of former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner, was attributed to carbon monoxide poisoning. However, recent reports indicate that authorities are still investigating whether there may be a possibility of homicide in this tragic case.
The Gardner family disclosed Miller’s untimely passing on March 23, just two days after he died. Following an extensive investigation, officials definitively identified carbon monoxide as the cause of his death on April 3. Initial inquiries had also considered other causes, including food poisoning and asphyxiation.
According to ESPN, a spokesperson representing the Costa Rican prosecutor’s office, which is overseeing the case, confirmed that the investigation remains active. Authorities are focused on determining whether the circumstances surrounding Miller’s death necessitate a ruling of homicide.
“The purpose of the investigation is precisely to determine whether or not we are dealing with a possible homicide. For this reason, it is not possible at this time to confirm or rule out that a crime has been committed,” the spokesperson stated.
Miller’s medical testing showed alarming levels of carboxyhemoglobin, a toxic compound formed when carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin in the blood. Testing revealed a carboxyhemoglobin saturation level of 64%. Medical experts consider saturation levels exceeding 50% to be potentially lethal.
During their stay at the Arenas Del Mar hotel in Manuel Antonio, several members of the Gardner family experienced illness, raising concerns regarding the safety of their accommodations.
In their statement, the family expressed deep sorrow and confusion: “We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of March 21. Miller was a beloved son and brother, and we cannot yet comprehend our life without his infectious smile. He loved football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, his family, and friends. He lived life to the fullest every single day.”
Brett Gardner enjoyed a notable career with the New York Yankees, playing as an outfielder for 14 seasons. He was part of the team that clinched the World Series title in 2009 and remained a cherished figure in the Bronx until his final season in 2021.
The community has rallied around the Gardner family during this challenging time. Many have expressed condolences and shared memories of Miller, emphasizing the impact he had on the lives of those who knew him. The tragic loss of a young life has ignited discussions about safety protocols and the need for vigilance in preventing similar incidents in the future.
As authorities continue their investigation, it remains unclear what additional information may surface. The possibility of a homicide ruling hangs over this heartbreaking event, leaving family, friends, and fans anxiously awaiting further news. The Gardners, like many affected by sudden grief, face an uncertain future as they seek answers.
For now, the focus remains on the memory of Miller Gardner, a young man whose vibrant spirit brought joy to many. The investigation strives to uncover the truth behind this tragic loss, ensuring that his legacy is honored and that justice is pursued.
