A GoFundMe campaign established for Rodney Hinton Jr., the Ohio father accused of murdering Deputy Larry Henderson, has gained significant attention as it raises funds for his legal defense. This tragic case unfolded one day after law enforcement fatally shot Hinton’s son during a pursuit involving a stolen vehicle.
Hinton Jr. faces a charge of aggravated murder after allegedly striking Deputy Henderson while the officer directed traffic near the University of Cincinnati, coinciding with a graduation ceremony. Cincinnati Police reported that the incident occurred around 1 p.m. on Friday.
This shocking situation developed just after Hinton’s 18-year-old son, Ryan Hinton, was killed by officers on Thursday while attempting to evade capture. According to Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge, officers were in pursuit of a stolen vehicle when Hinton and three others fled.
Officers chased Ryan Hinton, who was reportedly armed, as he hid behind a dumpster. When he emerged, an officer discharged their weapon, fatally wounding the suspect. Theetge confirmed that two other suspects involved in the stolen vehicle incident have been arrested, while one remains at large.
A GoFundMe titled “Justice for Rodney Hinton Jr and his Son” has attracted over $5,000, aiming to cover legal fees for Hinton Jr. The campaign mentions goals of seeking justice for his son and addressing alleged police brutality.
Another GoFundMe, “Help Honor Ryan Hinton’s Memory and Seek Justice,” focuses on memorializing the 18-year-old and has raised more than $7,000 to assist his family in seeking justice.
However, the National Police Association has voiced strong opposition to these fundraising efforts, urging GoFundMe to remove the campaign due to what they perceive as a violation of company policy. This public outcry highlights the contentious nature of the events surrounding these tragic incidents.
In light of these developments, the Hinton family’s attorneys stated that they have retained the Cochran Firm to investigate Ryan’s shooting death by law enforcement. They indicated that the investigation is still in its preliminary stages. Family members met with Cincinnati police to review bodycam footage of the incident, which reportedly caused significant emotional distress as they processed the traumatic event.
The attorneys expressed their condolences to the family of Deputy Henderson, acknowledging the loss felt by the entire community following recent events.
“This is an unimaginable tragedy for this community. Ryan Hinton’s family is heartbroken by this turn of events, and we are all devastated for the family of the officer who was killed,” the attorneys remarked.
Deputy Larry Henderson dedicated 33 years to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, serving in various specialized units since 1991, including the dive team, HCPA SWAT, the FBI Task Force, and the Bomb Unit. His commitment to law enforcement and the community was evident, as noted by Hamilton County Sheriff Charmaine McGuffey in a statement.
“Larry began his journey as a trainer early in his career, developing expertise that touched many officers’ lives,” McGuffey emphasized. “His ability to connect with and educate fellow deputies was extraordinary. We will continue to honor Larry’s life of service.”Â
In a gesture of respect, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine ordered flags across the state to be lowered to half-mast in memory of Deputy Henderson. This act symbolizes the state’s acknowledgment of the sacrifice made by the deputy, as well as the community’s mourning for one of its dedicated protectors.
As the legal cases involving both Hinton Jr. and the shooting of Ryan Hinton unfold, the community grapples with the broader implications of these incidents. Discussions surrounding police conduct, community safety, and the complexities of law enforcement relationships are more crucial than ever as residents seek to navigate the fallout from these tragic events.
