More than 20 hikers needing help were rescued from the summit of Mount Washington in New Hampshire following a weekend in extreme whiteout conditions.

Officials reported that the group reached the mountain’s towering 6,288-foot summit without adequate preparation. Many had not anticipated that summit services would be closed and that the state park was also closed for the season, as noted by Andy Vilaine, assistant general manager of the Mount Washington Cog Railway.

Vilaine stated that numerous hikers were experiencing hypothermia and lacked appropriate gear suitable for such harsh conditions.

First Hikes and Lack of Preparation

Many of the individuals involved admitted that this was their first hiking experience. Vilaine stressed the importance of preparation in outdoor activities. He urged, “Please don’t become a statistic and do your research before venturing out.”

The Dangers of Mount Washington

Mount Washington, known for its severe weather patterns, has appropriately earned the moniker “Home of the World’s Worst Weather.” Each year, the mountain attracts hikers with its breathtaking views, but it also poses significant risks.

Rescue Operations

The names of the rescued hikers have not been disclosed. They were transported to safer lower elevations aboard the Mount Washington Cog Railway, a historic rack-and-pinion railway that offers year-round tours on the mountain.

While the Cog Railway operates throughout the year, the summit’s facilities close after mid-October. From mid-October until mid-May, the railway halts service to the summit and instead carries visitors to Waumbek Station at 4,000 feet.

Winter Conditions

A winter advisory from the railway’s website warns that by the last week of October, sub-arctic conditions render the summit dangerous for casual adventurers. It is crucial for potential visitors to be aware and prepared.

State Park Recommendations for Hikers

In light of recent incidents, the New Hampshire State Park emphasized the need for hiking responsibility in a Facebook post. It advised, “Multiple people have arrived at the summit the last few days very unprepared for winter and required assistance. Be ‘wildly responsible’, and please research current higher summit weather and bring everything needed to hike in winter conditions or just hike another day.”
