Attorney General Pam Bondi praised the jury’s guilty verdict for Ryan Routh, who faced serious charges for attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump during a golf outing in Florida. This verdict underscores the Justice Department’s determination to combat escalating political violence in the United States.
A jury found Routh guilty on all counts related to his actions at Trump’s West Palm Beach golf club last September. Routh’s violent attempt on the life of the then-presidential candidate shocked many. After being convicted, Routh was reported to have attempted to harm himself with a pen in the courtroom, an incident that required intervention from U.S. Marshals to restrain him.
Bondi emphasized the significance of the verdict in a prepared statement. She said, “Today’s guilty verdict against would-be Trump assassin Ryan Routh illustrates the Department of Justice’s commitment to punishing those who engage in political violence. This attempted assassination was not only an attack on our President but an affront to our very nation itself. I am grateful to U.S. Attorney Jason Quiñones, his entire trial team, and our law enforcement partners for protecting President Trump and securing this important verdict.”
In the wake of the verdict, Trump expressed his appreciation via Truth Social, praising Bondi and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche. He noted, “Congratulations to Attorney General Pam Bondi, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, and the entire DOJ team on the conviction, in Florida, of the person who attempted an assassination on my life. The trial was meticulously handled, and I would like to thank the Judge and Jury for their time, professionalism, and patience. This was an evil man with an evil intention, and they caught him.”
Trump also acknowledged the crucial role played by various law enforcement agencies in apprehending Routh. He stressed the importance of public vigilance, stating, “I would also like to thank the Secret Service, Department of Florida Law Enforcement, and the wonderful person who spotted him running from the site of the crime and acted by following him, gathering information on the car type and license plate to the Sheriff’s Office IMMEDIATELY, which led to his arrest and conviction. What incredible instinct and foresight this person had — A very big moment for justice in America!”
While attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York City when the verdict was announced, Trump told reporters he was “very appreciative” of the Justice Department’s handling of the case. He remarked on the significance of the verdict, stating, “Everybody involved, along with their team of people, handled it really well, and it was very important. You can’t let things like that happen. It’s not just about me — it’s about protecting any president, or even any person.”
Trump further elaborated on the gravity of Routh’s actions, indicating that such attempts pose a risk to all public figures. He stated, “You can’t allow that to happen. And so justice was served, and we’ll see what happens. But I very much appreciate the judge, jury, and everybody involved. It was so professionally handled, and it’s a great honor.”
Ryan Routh, aged 59, faced multiple charges, including attempting to assassinate a major presidential candidate, assaulting a federal officer, and several firearms offenses. He now faces the possibility of life in prison as a result of his actions.
This case sparked a nationwide conversation about the safety of political figures and the increasing prevalence of violent acts motivated by political differences. Bondi’s remarks and the outcome of the Routh trial serve as a reminder of the importance of maintaining the rule of law and protecting the democratic process.
The conviction stands as a vigilant assertion that political violence will not be tolerated, and it resolves to deter similar acts in the future. Both Bondi and Trump have highlighted their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of elected officials as well as the citizens they serve.
