A Florida woman has become a beacon for deli lovers by organizing ‘meat ups’ at delicatessens throughout the United States. With more than 2,000 members in her Facebook group, she has shared her passion for pastrami with a growing community.
Ellen Fried, the founder of the Facebook group ‘Ellen Loves Pastrami,’ aims to discover restaurants that still craft their own pastrami. Her journey began in 2009 after she met David Sax, the author of ‘Save the Deli: In Search of Perfect Pastrami, Crusty Rye and the Heart of Jewish Delicatessen,’ during a book signing. This encounter inspired her to unite fellow deli enthusiasts.
Originally from near Atlantic City, New Jersey, Fried now enjoys life in Delray Beach, Florida. Her ‘meat ups’ have taken her from South Florida to Southern California, and she remains dedicated to connecting people through their shared love for pastrami.
Fried’s Facebook group quickly gained popularity and now includes several other culinary-focused groups, such as ‘Ellen Loves Burgers’ and ‘Ellen Loves Beef Ribs, Brisket & Steaks.’ However, the pastrami group remains the most engaged and lively, according to Fried. She remarked that discussions often revolve around personal preferences, nostalgia for local delis, and which establishments fulfill the pastrami promise.
The excitement surrounding these ‘meat ups’ often attracts attendees from various cities, including Philadelphia, Las Vegas, and New York City. Fried has cultivated a loyal following, forming a ‘little contingent’ who eagerly share their experiences and insights about delicatessens.
In reminiscing about the past, Fried expressed her longing for the days when quality pastrami was more accessible. She noted that finding a remarkable deli today feels increasingly challenging. These sentiments resonate with many in her community.
Jeff Lanigan, 78, has been part of Fried’s gatherings since they met in 2015 at Harold’s New York Deli in Edison, New Jersey. Currently splitting his time between New Jersey and South Florida, he attends as many ‘meat ups’ as his schedule allows. Lanigan and his wife recently participated in an event at Ben’s Kosher Delicatessen in Boca Raton.
He expressed, ‘It’s a social event and we just love it.’ This camaraderie reinforces the sense of belonging among deli aficionados.
The undeniable appeal of pastrami is a frequent topic at Fried’s gatherings. She explained that while she appreciates corned beef, pastrami stands out due to its unique spices, making it a comfort food that holds a special place in many hearts. Fried also mentioned that finding exceptional pastrami is more intriguing than seeking out good burgers, which are much easier to locate across the country.
Lanigan praised Fried for her genuine connection to the deli culture and her efforts to preserve it. He described her as ‘salt of the earth,’ highlighting her ability to find joy and quality in every place they visit for pastrami.
The group atmosphere allows for diverse opinions about pastrami. According to Lanigan, preferences range from those who enjoy a fatty cut to those favoring lean options. He added, ‘Everybody goes and enjoys it. This might not be my favorite today, but it’s better than the alternative of nothing.’ This sentiment encapsulates the communal spirit Fried has fostered through her initiatives.
