War Secretary Pete Hegseth has delivered a striking critique of the Pentagon’s entrenched acquisition bureaucracy. In a passionate address, he likened the department’s planning culture to the outdated practices of Soviet-style central planning, asserting that such a system has stifled innovation, risk-taking, and ultimately, the nation’s preparedness for conflict.
Addressing a gathering of defense industry executives, Hegseth did not shy away from invoking the threats against the United States, but he quickly redirected his focus towards an internal challenge. He articulated his concerns about an adversary that has emerged from within the country’s defense apparatus.
“Today, I’d like to talk to you about an adversary that poses a serious threat to the United States of America,” Hegseth stated emphatically. “This adversary is one of the last bastions of central planning in the world. It governs by imposing five-year plans, dictating demands across time zones and continents, stifling creativity, and disrupting the U.S. defense.
