Earlier this year, an analysis conducted by University of Southern California professor Michael Mische predicted that Californians might face even more severe challenges. Mische warned, “Any disruptions to oil and foreign gasoline supplies will exacerbate California’s gasoline dilemma and drive-up prices. Any disruptions to maritime markets and operations will significantly affect California gasoline security and consumer prices, impacting surrounding states such as Nevada and Arizona.”

Further compounding the issue, Valero Energy Corp. announced plans to close its Benicia refinery near San Francisco by April 2026. This closure threatens to endanger over 400 jobs while increasing the likelihood of further price hikes.

He stated, “Despite our state’s plentiful oil reserves, Californians are forced by Democrat climate policies to pay the nation’s highest gas prices, now around $5.00 per gallon, even more than Hawaii.”
