Phil Robertson passed away at 79 on Sunday after a prolonged health battle, but the Duck Commander founder’s influence and story extend far beyond his reality television fame on A&E. His journey from humble beginnings to an empire built on duck hunting and family values exemplifies an extraordinary life.
A Louisiana native, Robertson embarked on his journey in 1972 when he established the Duck Commander hunting company. This venture followed a brief period as a starting quarterback at Louisiana Tech, a role he relinquished to NFL star Terry Bradshaw. Reflecting on that time, Robertson shared his unique perspective with the Ruston Daily Leader in 2021.
He recounted his conversations with Bradshaw, stating, “I said, ‘Bradshaw, here’s the deal. You’re a big strong kid, you’ve got a strong arm and you want to play in the NFL… I’d rather hunt ducks than have large violent men stomp me in the dirt.'” This pivotal decision foreshadowed his successful career in the hunting industry.
In recognition of his contributions, Robertson was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 2020 as an esteemed outdoorsman. His legacy continues to resonate through his business, which encompasses duck calls, hunting videos, and apparel.
Robertson’s son Jase provided insight into the origins of the Duck Commander brand. As Jase explained, “Dad was hunting on the (Arkansas-Louisiana) state line at Moss Lake in 1972 when a friend suggested he manufacture duck calls. He told Dad, ‘You don’t just call the ducks; you command them.'” This advice marked the inception of what would become a prominent brand in the hunting world.
