Philadelphia Woman Seeks Justice After Ambush Shooting in Puerto Rico Claims Her Fiancé

A woman from Philadelphia is demanding justice following the tragic death of her fiancé, who was shot in what she describes as a random ambush while the couple was visiting Puerto Rico.

Kelly Crispin shared her story, detailing how she and her fiancé, Omar Padilla Vélez, were driving back to his family’s home around 1:45 a.m. on January 3 after enjoying a night out dancing in San Juan. She recounted how they mistakenly turned off Calle Cerra, the popular nightlife strip, when their SUV was suddenly surrounded.

The couple found themselves trapped as more than a dozen masked gunmen, armed with AR-style rifles, closed in on their vehicle at the intersection of Calle Blanca and Calle La Nueva Palma, according to Crispin.

As Padilla Vélez attempted to navigate away from the attackers, gunfire erupted. Crispin, who suffered injuries to her hand and shoulder, reflected on the chaotic moments that followed.

Tragic Incident Unfolds

Padilla Vélez, a chemist with DuPont, was struck in the head during the assault. Crispin reported that, despite her injuries and the traumatic event, a friend who was with them remained unharmed.

Once the gunfire subsided, one of the assailants approached the couple’s vehicle and snatched Crispin’s phone as she attempted to call for help. To her shock, the men seemed surprised to see a woman in the car. They rifled through her purse before ultimately returning her phone and leaving with nothing else.

In a desperate attempt to save Padilla Vélez’s life, Crispin and her friend placed him in the back seat of their car and did their best to control the bleeding as they fled the scene. They navigated through the area under the direction of the gunmen, ultimately meeting an ambulance at a nearby gas station.

Emergency Response and Aftermath

The ambulance rushed Padilla Vélez to Centro Médico de Puerto Rico, but despite initial hopes for recovery, he suffered a devastating stroke caused by a bullet fragment. Tragically, he passed away just days later, leaving Crispin heartbroken and devastated.

Now, amidst her grief, Crispin is calling for accountability and justice for her fiancé. She expressed her concern over the lack of media coverage and police action surrounding the case, stating that there seems to be little urgency in pursuing the investigation.

Speaking with FOX 29, Crispin said, “There’s no media coverage, there’s no pressure on the police to solve this case. No one knows that this very smart, young Puerto Rican man was murdered, no one knows that a tourist down there was shot multiple times.”

The Fight for Justice

During an interview with Fox News Digital, Crispin emphasized that her fiancé had deep roots in Puerto Rico, having grown up there and being familiar with the neighborhoods and streets. She pointed out that the area where the attack occurred is generally considered safe.

No suspects have been apprehended, and the police have stated that the investigation is ongoing, according to reports from both The Philadelphia Inquirer and FOX 29.

Reflecting on their plans for a shared future, Crispin stated, “We had just made this decision to spend the rest of our lives together, forever. It just feels so cruel that this was taken away.”

Call for Change

Crispin’s heart-wrenching story highlights not just the tragedy of her loss, but also the need for heightened safety measures for tourists in Puerto Rico and across the globe. She expressed a desire for increased attention to violence against tourists, urging local authorities to prioritize such incidents to prevent further tragedies.

As Crispin mourns the loss of Padilla Vélez, she urges others to remember his life and honor his memory by seeking justice. In her quest for answers, she hopes to inspire change that will protect others from experiencing similar heartache.

Authorities in San Juan have yet to respond to requests for comments on the case, creating additional tension as the search for answers continues.
