In a shocking incident, a mayor in the Philippines survived an apparent rocket-propelled grenade attack on his convoy. The attack occurred in broad daylight on Sunday morning in Maguindanao del Sur, a southern province known for its political unrest.
According to the Philippine News Agency, Mayor Akmad Ampatuan was inside a bulletproof vehicle during the assault, which was reported to have taken place around 6:30 a.m. local time.
Footage capturing the attack reveals two assailants exiting a white van. One of the men appeared to be armed with a rocket-propelled grenade launcher, while the other was equipped with a firearm. This alarming scene unfolded as the men took clear aim at the mayor’s convoy.
Just moments into the video, one attacker aimed the RPG launcher down the street. He fired the weapon before quickly retreating back to the van, all of this occurring just as a black SUV turned onto the road and was caught in the subsequent explosion caused by the blast.
Authorities confirmed that the attack did not result in any injuries to Mayor Ampatuan; however, his convoy was not entirely unscathed. A backup vehicle, a pickup truck, sustained gunfire during the tumultuous event.
According to additional reports from the Philippine News Agency, police and military personnel responded swiftly. Following the incident, a pursuit ensued that resulted in the deaths of three suspected attackers, marking a dramatic end to a frightening scenario.
The motive behind this brazen assault remains unclear. Local officials have not yet provided a detailed explanation, leaving many speculating about the political implications of the attack. This event raises serious concerns regarding the safety of public officials in areas prone to violence.
