Multiple individuals were arrested in Portland, Oregon during a chaotic scene that unfolded Saturday night near an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility. This incident occurred after a planned protest escalated into a riot, resulting in injuries to four law enforcement officers.
The Portland Police Bureau reported the first arrests in connection with what they described as “criminal activity” near the federal building located in the South Portland neighborhood. Three individuals were taken into custody as officers responded to the situation shortly after 6 p.m.
The police clarified that their actions were aimed solely at those engaging in violent behavior, stating, “The arrests were strictly focused on criminal actions, and not constitutionally protected free speech.” The police emphasized their commitment to investigating anyone involved in violence or property damage, who would face potential arrest and prosecution.
The tensions began when the city hosted a demonstration called the “No Kings” protest at 1 p.m. Earlier in the day, this event was billed as a large-scale free speech gathering, attracting tens of thousands of participants.
The atmosphere changed drastically when, just before 6 p.m., police were alerted that a federal officer sustained injuries due to the crowd’s actions. Police issued a warning, advising demonstrators not to interfere with a reported medical incident inside the ICE facility.
Once law enforcement stabilized the situation, they confirmed that the injured officer did not require medical attention. Subsequently, the ongoing criminal activity in the area led the Portland Police Bureau to declare a riot.
Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary for Homeland Security, reported that protestors launched fireworks, smoke grenades, and hurled rocks at federal officers who were present. Glass was shattered as the mob attempted to forcibly enter the ICE facility. Fortunately, federal law enforcement was able to secure the building, despite four officers suffering injuries in the process.
Police identified and arrested several individuals associated with the riot. Around 8 p.m., Sabian Crisantos, aged 25, was apprehended for attempted assault of a public safety officer. Just after 10:50 p.m., Tyson Kahnert, a 20-year-old, was arrested after officers witnessed him throwing a rock at the ICE building. He now faces multiple charges, including first-degree criminal mischief and attempted assault.
Cory Oien, 38, was taken into custody at approximately 1 a.m. on Sunday. He had been observed collecting traffic control devices and placing them in his truck. Oien faces charges for first-degree theft and driving under the influence of intoxicants.
All three individuals were booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center as investigations continue. Police have cautioned that further arrests may still occur as inquiries progress.
The Portland Police Bureau reminded the public that not making immediate arrests during heightened tensions does not preclude subsequent charges against individuals later.
The events of Saturday night highlight ongoing tensions surrounding immigration policies and the role of ICE in the community. As protests evolve, authorities maintain a keen interest in balancing public safety with the rights to peaceful assembly and free speech.
Moving forward, the community is bracing for future gatherings that may similarly test the boundaries between expression and unlawful activity. The series of events serves as a stern reminder of the volatility that can arise in politically charged environments.
This incident underscores the broader national conversation regarding immigration enforcement and community relations with federal agencies. Moving forward, it will be crucial to monitor these developments as local and federal authorities work to navigate both public safety and the protection of civil liberties.
