A recent poll indicates that Democrat Mikie Sherrill holds a six-point lead over Republican Jack Ciattarelli in the New Jersey governor’s race. This gubernatorial election, set for November, is viewed as a bellwether for the 2026 midterm elections.
As the nation approaches a pivotal election period, congressional Republicans find themselves in a precarious situation. They hold a narrow majority with just eight months remaining in President Donald Trump’s term.
According to a StimSight Research Poll for InsiderNJ, Sherrill garners 48% support while Ciattarelli follows with 42%. With only three months until the election, the numbers suggest a competitive race.
Interestingly, just 32% of participants reported they were definite in their support for Sherrill, while 31% expressed firm support for Ciattarelli. This indicates potential for shifts in voter sentiment as the election date approaches.
Additionally, the poll, conducted from July 18 to July 24, revealed that 1% of probable voters plan to vote for a third-party candidate. Meanwhile, 9% of respondents remain undecided.
Affordability and taxes rank as the primary issues for New Jersey voters in this election cycle. A striking 53% identified affordability as their main concern, while 43% mentioned taxes.
Among those who prioritized affordability, the responses were closely divided when asked which candidate would best tackle this issue. Sherrill received support from 36%, compared to 34% for Ciattarelli.
Ciattarelli was perceived as more adept at addressing tax concerns, with 50% of voters favoring him on this issue, whereas only 15% opted for Sherrill.
The poll highlighted that 54% of respondents believe Sherrill would successfully create economic opportunities for families in New Jersey. In contrast, 49% felt similarly about Ciattarelli.
The protection of Social Security and Medicare resonates deeply with voters, as 30% identified this as part of the broader affordability crisis confronting the state. When asked about Trump’s ambitious legislative proposals, responses were mixed. Only 36% endorsed Trump’s “big, beautiful bill,” while a majority of 51% expressed skepticism, believing it would negatively impact families in New Jersey.
A further 27% of voters identified the need to stand up to Trump as a key issue that will affect their vote in November.
Notably, both Trump and incumbent Democratic Governor Phil Murphy received nearly identical job approval ratings from New Jersey voters, standing at 44% and 45% respectively. This raises questions about public sentiment surrounding state leadership.
Respondents had diverse opinions on where to assign blame for the state’s ongoing challenges. While 37% pointed towards state leadership in Trenton, 27% blamed the federal government in Washington, and 34% assigned fault to both levels of government.
Patrick Murray from StimSight Research noted that the approval ratings suggest voters seek reliable leadership to address economic issues rather than politicians who merely critique their opponents.
The poll findings also reflect discontent among voters regarding the Republican Party’s focus on Trump. Approximately 54% of respondents strongly agreed, and another 12% somewhat agreed that the party appears excessively concerned with catering to Trump’s interests.

Mikie Sherrill, a sitting U.S. congresswoman representing New Jersey’s 11th district, has utilized sharp critiques of Trump and prominent figures such as Elon Musk to distinguish herself from five well-established rivals in the June primary. With a background as a Navy helicopter pilot and former federal prosecutor, she has maintained her House seat since 2019.
On the other hand, Jack Ciattarelli, a Trump-endorsed former state lawmaker and businessman, overcame four challengers to secure the Republican nomination. This isn’t Ciattarelli’s first attempt at the governor’s office, as he previously ran unsuccessfully in 2021.
The 2026 New Jersey gubernatorial race could set significant precedents for both parties as they navigate the increasingly polarized political landscape. The leaning of voters as expressed in the poll could impact subsequent elections far beyond the state’s borders. The outcome is not merely a local contest but a potential reflection of national trends.
As candidates continue to engage with the electorate, they must address the critical issues highlighted by voters. Both affordability and economic opportunity will remain top priorities as they campaign leading up to November.
