Pope Francis’ Body Revealed in Photos Ahead of Upcoming Funeral Ceremony

The initial images of Pope Francis’ body were made public on Tuesday, drawing attention as global leaders prepare for his funeral scheduled for this Saturday morning.

The poignant photographs illustrate Francis lying in a wooden casket, adorned in red vestments and his bishop’s miter. The Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, can be seen offering prayers over the pontiff in the chapel of the Domus Santa Marta, where he resided.

Cardinals Gather to Plan Future

On Tuesday, cardinals convened for their first meeting in the Vatican’s synod hall, marking a vital step toward the upcoming conclave that will select the next pope. During this significant gathering, they established Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Peter’s Square as the time for the funeral service.

This solemn occasion will be officiated by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, the dean of the College of Cardinals. The faithful will have the opportunity to pay their final respects starting Wednesday, once the casket is transferred to St. Peter’s Basilica.

World Leaders to Attend

U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have announced their attendance at the funeral. Furthermore, Argentine President Javier Milei is also expected to participate in honoring the pontiff born in Argentina.

Remembering the Pontiff

Pope Francis passed away on Monday morning at the age of 88, following a stroke that led to a coma and subsequently resulted in heart failure. His death signifies the conclusion of his 12-year papacy as the 266th pope and spiritual guide for the Roman Catholic Church.

Throughout his papacy, Francis faced numerous health challenges, including a chronic lung ailment and undergoing surgery to remove part of one lung in his youth. Earlier this year, he spent 38 days in Gemelli Hospital, initiating treatment for a respiratory crisis that escalated into double pneumonia.

Despite ongoing recovery, he made a significant final public appearance on Easter Sunday, extending blessings and offering a farewell to followers from his popemobile. That day, he also met U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris at Casa Santa Marta.

His Easter appearance took place in the same loggia where, on March 13, 2013, he was introduced to the world as the first pope hailing from the Americas.

A Lasting Legacy

Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, head of the Italian bishops’ conference and a potential candidate for the next pope, reflected poignantly on Francis’ legacy. He remarked, “He gave himself to the end, going out to meet everyone, to speak to everyone, and to bless everyone.”

Tributes Pour In

In the wake of the pope’s passing, the Empire State Building illuminated its façade in gold and white, serving as a tribute to Pope Francis’ memory.

Final Resting Place

In his final will, Pope Francis confirmed his wish to be buried at St. Mary Major Basilica, located just outside of the Vatican. This church is home to his cherished icon of the Virgin Mary.

On March 23, following an extended hospital stay, Francis visited the basilica to place flowers in front of the icon. He returned for a final prayer before the statue on April 12, symbolizing the deep connection he had with his faith and the Virgin Mary.

As the world mourns the passing of Pope Francis, authorities, church officials, and individuals globally are reflecting on the impact he made during his tenure as pope. His compassion, dedication, and determination to engage with people from all walks of life will remain a significant part of his enduring legacy.

Many look forward to honoring him in the forthcoming days, recognizing the profound spiritual journey he inspired across the globe.
