Pope Leo XIV Set to Canonize Two Modern Saints This Weekend Amidst Jubilee Celebrations

The Jubilee, also referred to as the Holy Year, has drawn thousands of visitors to Rome, Vatican City, and various locations across Italy. This weekend, the atmosphere is charged with excitement as crowds prepare to witness a momentous event in the Catholic Church.

Pope to Lead Canonization Ceremony

On Sunday, Pope Leo XIV will officiate the canonization of Carlo Acutis, a young computer programmer, and Pier Giorgio Frassati, an Italian student known for his passion for the outdoors. Both figures embody virtues that resonate with many modern Catholics.

A Revitalizing Journey to Rome

Fr. Charlie Gallagher, the pastor of Immaculate Conception Church in Washington, D.C., has traveled to Rome to attend this significant ceremony. He shared his feelings about the event.

“The atmosphere here is already one of expectant joy, even electric,” Gallagher relayed from Rome. His arrival coincides with the Vatican’s anticipation of over 32 million pilgrims who are expected to visit during the Jubilee year, as reported by the U.S. Embassy in Italy.

A Gathering of the Faithful

Gallagher expressed that many attendees come from various parts of the world, including a small group from his parish. He predicts a gathering of at least 250,000 worshippers on the day of the canonization.

Personal Connections to the Saints

This canonization holds special significance for Gallagher, particularly due to his deep connection with Pier Giorgio Frassati. He explained his personal admiration.

“I chose Pier Giorgio Frassati as my patron. When I became a priest, I began corresponding with Giorgio’s niece, Wanda,” Gallagher disclosed. “Pier Giorgio passed away in 1925, the following year Wanda was born.”

Gallagher and Wanda have maintained their relationship for two decades. Meeting Wanda as a seminarian in Rome allowed Gallagher to gain insights into the impact her uncle has had on her life.

The Legacy of Frassati

“Pope John Paul II called Frassati the ‘Man of the Beatitudes,’ highlighting his incredible ability to embody the full spectrum of the Gospel,” Gallagher remarked. He emphasized how Frassati radiated joy and spontaneity.

“He showed us how to win our friends to Jesus Christ with every part of his heart,” Gallagher added, reflecting on Frassati’s enduring influence.

Carlo Acutis: A Modern Inspire

Gallagher also highlighted the life lessons from Carlo Acutis. Despite Acutis’s intelligence, he faced academic challenges, even failing an exam at one point.

“When his mother questioned him about it, Acutis replied that he had more pressing matters, like promoting devotion to the Eucharist through the documentation of Eucharistic miracles,” Gallagher explained.

Memories and Reflections

During his seminarian years in Rome, Gallagher spent four years living in the city, where numerous memories surfaced as he returned for this occasion. “It’s a blessing to revisit my favorite churches and savor some authentic Roman Carbonara,” he said with nostalgia.

Pope Francis’s Vision

Pope Francis has been instrumental in advancing Carlo Acutis’s path to sainthood. His determination stems from the belief that the Church requires vibrant figures like Acutis to engage with younger generations, particularly in addressing the complexities posed by the digital era.

Pope Leo XIV has continued this vision, connecting the need for spiritual leaders like Acutis to the challenges of technology and artificial intelligence affecting society today.

The Humble Service of Frassati

Pier Giorgio Frassati’s life exemplified profound faith through his humble, often unnoticed service to the impoverished residents of Turin. Reports describe how he lived simply and willingly shared food, money, and whatever assistance was needed by those around him.

Frassati’s dedication ultimately led to his untimely death in his early 20s due to polio, which he likely contracted while serving the needy.

A Call to Reflection

The canonization of Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati serves as a powerful reminder of living a life dedicated to faith, compassion, and community service. As pilgrims gather in Rome to witness this historic event, they will also reflect on the values embodied by these two young saints.

With the enthusiasm surrounding the Jubilee celebrations, the faithful are inspired to carry forward the legacies of Acutis and Frassati in their daily lives, fostering a spirit of joy and service.

As the world watches, this weekend promises to be a poignant chapter in the ongoing narrative of faith and devotion within the Catholic Church.
