Portland’s Urban Chaos: A First-Hand Account of Antifa’s Control and Police Inaction

For over one hundred consecutive nights, Portland has witnessed Antifa members commandeering the streets outside a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility. As dusk settled one recent Tuesday evening, it became starkly evident that they—not the few police officers present—were in charge of the situation. Orders had come from higher-ups instructing police to avoid engagement with the masked activists.

Witnessing Antifa in action at night evokes imagery reminiscent of a mental asylum merged with a scene from a Batman film. The surreal nature of the crowd made it difficult to fathom that these individuals were indeed real.

A Driver’s Defiance

Shortly after my arrival at this scene of chaos, a pickup truck emblazoned with an American flag pulled up. The driver, Shannon, explained his motivation for being there.

“Because this is outrageous,” he declared vehemently.

In an instant, masked Antifa members surrounded his vehicle, with one individual on an electric bike trying to provoke him. They chanted sexual slurs, urging him to act violently. Shannon smartly declined their bait and drove away, affirming his dissent without escalating the situation.

Helena’s Distress

As the tension escalated, I noticed Antifa had fixated on another target across the street—a woman in a white sedan named Helena. Just moments before, she had expressed her discontent with the state of the city.

“Our streets are ravaged. Just look around: homelessness, litter, and businesses closing their doors. We are not a thriving city,” she lamented.

Now, her car was encircled by masked individuals, including one dressed in a giant frog costume. They hurled insults and attempted to intimidate her. Recognizing her distress, I approached her vehicle, tapped her shoulder, and recommended that she leave.

“I want to, but they won’t let me,” she replied, clearly frightened.

In an effort to assist, I addressed the crowd, saying emphatically, “She wants to leave; let her go.” Surprisingly, the frog-costumed individual echoed my sentiment, allowing Helena to exit without further incident.

The Police’s Inaction

As I crossed back towards the officers, one of them inquired, “What happened there?” My astonishment was palpable as I recounted, “They wouldn’t let her leave, so I helped her get out.” The officer simply responded, “Good.” I couldn’t help but question why it fell to me instead of law enforcement to intervene.

Moments later, chants of “Run, Katie, run” broke through the crowd. I quickly deduced that the Katie in question was journalist Katie Daviscourt, who had been actively reporting on Antifa outside the ICE facility for several months. I turned my attention to the commotion as part of the mob began fleeing, attempting to obscure CCTV cameras with umbrellas.

Daviscourt had just been struck in the face with a flagpole, a burgeoning bruise quickly appearing. As the chaos intensified, she pointed out the assailant to the police, who unfortunately responded with a notable lack of urgency.

The officers informed her to walk nearly half a mile to report the incident, further demonstrating the reluctance of the police to take decisive action amidst such disorder.

A Community Abandoned

As we made our way to the police line, law enforcement reiterated that directives from superiors prohibited engagement to prevent becoming a flashpoint. This resulted in a striking withdrawal from their responsibilities regarding public safety.

Just as the authorities in Portland have allowed addiction and homelessness to proliferate throughout the city, they have simultaneously granted similar latitude to Antifa. The local police seemed to regard these streets, even during a journalist’s assault, as belonging to Antifa.

Rumors of Reinforcement

Eventually, agents from ICE appeared, attempting to disperse the crowd, and it seemed some arrests were made. However, the response from Portland’s police was passive, reminiscent of the bumbling character Barney Fife from the classic television series.

Rumors circulated about the potential deployment of the National Guard to reinforce law and order. For a community weary from being insulted and harassed by Antifa members, this news could not come soon enough.

Looking Towards a New Dawn

As dawn broke over Portland, the morning mist began to clear. Hope lingered in the air, raising the question: Could this be the day when the government reclaim the city from Antifa? If so, it would be an overdue moment for a community longing for security and order.
