Hollywood often has a strange tendency to transform notorious villains into sympathetic heroes. Productions like Wicked have reimagined the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz as a misunderstood protagonist. Similarly, Disney’s movies featuring Maleficent and Cruella also offer fresh perspectives on classic characters. Even the character of Venom, a notable foe in the Spider-Man series, received his own trilogy.
Now, the latest entry in the Predator series has surfaced with Predator: Badlands from 20th Century Studios. This action horror revival allows viewers to see the iconic alien combatant in an entirely new light, diverging from its traditional role.
In Badlands, the Predator assumes the role of an unlikely hero. Instead of a menacing villain, the story centers on Dek, played by Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi. Dek is a Yautja, a species known for its prowess in combat, yet he faces ridicule from his warrior clan due to his smaller stature. His father and brother regard him as weak, particularly in a world that values strength above all.
As he grapples with his familial expectations, Dek vows to prove his worth by hunting down the legendary Kalisk. This apex predator resembles a colossal blend of lion and gorilla, complete with disturbing tentacles and a regenerative body. The stakes are high, and Dek feels driven to establish his worth in a hyper-competitive environment.
Unfortunately for Dek, his journey leads him to the treacherous planet of Genna, where he meets Thia, played by Elle Fanning. Thia is a synthetic humanoid created by the Weyland-Yutani Corporation, the same company featured in the renowned Alien series, hinting at exciting potential crossovers in this universe.
Trapped in a vulture’s nest, Thia reveals that she has crucial information about the Kalisk’s whereabouts. With her legs now a painful reminder of a previous encounter with the beast, she offers her assistance to Dek. Although reluctant, Dek recognizes Thia’s knowledge as a vital advantage in the dangerous terrain of Genna.
However, Thia has her motivations. She wishes to reunite with her sister Tessa, another synthetic who was lost during the attack. Thia explains to Dek that she and Tessa were designed to feel emotions and possess sensitivity—something foreign to a warrior like Dek. His understanding of strength and survival starkly contrasts with Thia’s philosophical outlook on companionship.
One poignant moment arises when Dek questions Thia’s survival abilities. Her response, asserting that while she can indeed survive alone, the desire for shared existence is what truly matters, challenges Dek’s view of strength.
The unpredictable partnership between the stoic Dek and the lively Thia injects an unexpected comedic flair into Badlands, almost resembling a buddy comedy across a sci-fi landscape. Thia’s vibrant personality provides comic relief amid the evident perils—her robotic existence contrasting sharply with their fight for survival against needle-exploding plants and razor-sharp grasses.
Badlands represents the sixth installment in the Predator franchise, not including the Alien vs. Predator crossover films. Notably, this film carries a PG-13 rating, a departure from its R-rated predecessors. This rating stems from the absence of human casualties, as there are no humans featured in this territory, although alien conflicts abound.
Director and co-writer Dan Trachtenberg, who previously found acclaim with Prey, delivers an immersive world with stunning visual effects in Badlands. He adeptly crafts a universe that engages viewers while maintaining the film’s intensity. The otherworldly landscapes astonish, further elevating the narrative’s appeal. Fans seeking Trachtenberg’s finest work need look no further than the underappreciated 10 Cloverfield Lane.
Overall, Predator: Badlands showcases a captivating evolution of a beloved sci-fi franchise. While it may not reach the pinnacle of must-see cinema, it provides an entertaining escape filled with action and adventure. Trachtenberg’s distinct vision breathes new life into the Predator universe while hinting at exciting possibilities for Dek and Thia in future installments.
Predator: Badlands is rated PG-13 for scenes of strong sci-fi violence. The film runs for approximately 1 hour and 47 minutes and is currently showing in theaters.
