On Thursday, President Donald Trump expressed appreciation for the heroic canines who diligently protect citizens and their homeland. His remarks coincided with National K-9 Veterans Day, an annual event celebrated on March 13 that recognizes the “canine courage” and valiant efforts of military and police dogs.
In a heartfelt message, Trump acknowledged the indispensable roles these fearless dogs play in safeguarding America. He noted that they serve on the front lines, in combat zones, and at the borders, asserting their status as invaluable defenders.
The White House reported that the military is home to over 30,000 dedicated working dogs, with approximately 1,600 dogs currently active in service. These four-legged warriors undergo rigorous training to detect explosives and narcotics, as well as to assist in search and rescue operations.
Among the most renowned military working dogs is Conan, a member of the Army Special Operations Forces. Conan, who was named after the late-night talk show host Conan O’Brien, is a veteran of 50 combat missions. His noteworthy contributions include tracking down Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi during the operation that led to the terrorist leader’s demise in October 2019 in Syria. Though Conan sustained injuries during the mission, he made a full recovery and was later honored by Trump at the White House in 2019 with a medal and plaque.
Sadly, Conan passed away in 2023 after being adopted by his former handler, leaving a lasting legacy in the hearts of many.
Also remembered is Hurricane, a decorated dog in U.S. history who served in the Secret Service. This dedicated Belgian Malinois, who died in February after over a decade of service, earned numerous accolades including a Secret Service Award for Meritorious Service and a Distinguished Service Medal. Hurricane gained national attention when he bravely tackled an intruder who breached the White House gate in 2014 while former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama were nearby, watching a movie.
In 2022, Hurricane was one of three dogs bestowed with the Animals in War & Peace Distinguished Service Medal on Capitol Hill. This recognition placed him among the ranks of celebrated K-9s in history. Joining him in this honor were Smoky, a Yorkshire Terrier who served in World War II, and Feco, a Hungarian Vizsla explosive detection dog. Feco had accomplished over 365 bomb searches at that time, earning him a special place in the Guinness World Records.
Trump also took a moment to acknowledge Cairo, a deceased SEAL Team Six dog who played a crucial role in the raid that eliminated al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in May 2011. Additionally, he honored Marine veteran Rex, who was credited with saving countless lives by detecting explosives during combat in Iraq. Rex’s remarkable service alongside Corporal Megan Leavey was the inspiration for the 2017 film named after the brave soldier.
As Trump closed his remarks on National K-9 Veterans Day, he emphasized gratitude for all K-9 Corps veterans who selflessly protect the American people and preserve our way of life. Their unwavering loyalty and courage exemplify the bond shared between humans and their canine companions.
This day, celebrated across the nation, serves as a poignant reminder of the tireless work of military and police dogs. Each of these brave animals represents a unique story of bond and service, standing as a testament to their steadfast role in safeguarding freedom and ensuring safety. They remind us of the unbreakable connection between man and dog, living up to the noble title of man’s best friend.
