Prince Andrew is not willing to vacate his Royal Lodge mansion without a struggle.
Recent reports indicate that Andrew, the troubled member of the royal family, has consented to move out of his expansive 30-room Royal Lodge, even though his lease extends until 2078. However, he is pushing for alternative accommodations, specifically requesting Frogmore Cottage, the previous residence of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and Adelaide Cottage for his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson.
Fox News Digital sought comments from both Buckingham Palace and a representative for Ferguson, who is 66 years old.
Hilary Fordwich, a British royal expert, expressed her views to Fox News Digital, stating that Andrew appears completely detached from reality and exhibits an entitled mindset. She remarked that if he genuinely cared about the monarchy’s longevity, he would not have put it at risk. Fordwich criticized Andrew for putting his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in a precarious situation, suggesting he should handle the circumstances with more grace.
According to insiders, it was Andrew who initiated the negotiations. Since 2008, he and Ferguson have resided at Royal Lodge, despite their divorce in 1996.
A source mentioned that Frogmore Cottage may be too small for both Andrew and Ferguson, while Adelaide Cottage, located in close proximity, would allow the two to maintain their relationship.
Royal watchers remain uncertain about the progression of discussions at the palace. A friend of the former couple noted that nobody can predict how things will unfold.
Importantly, no renovations are required for either property, and there would be no additional security costs to taxpayers. Negotiations reportedly focus on the amount of rent Andrew and Ferguson would be expected to pay. Reports indicate that there have been days of intense talks aimed at finalizing Andrew’s departure from Royal Lodge, a residence he has occupied since 2003.
Sources close to the situation have confirmed that discussions are still active.
Furthermore, Prince Andrew is seeking undisclosed compensation from King Charles III to cover extensive renovation costs incurred at Royal Lodge, which experts claim amount to several million pounds. He is also advocating for respect and support for his two daughters, simply to allow them to continue their royal duties and charity commitments.
Ian Pelham Turner, a royal analyst, commented that Andrew wishes for a financial settlement for Sarah Ferguson, who also contributed to the refurbishment costs of Royal Lodge. He emphasized that Andrew is interested in conducting his own business activities without royal interference.
Turner summarized that the royal family is in a position to accommodate these requests. However, Prince William is likely to seek a binding agreement to ensure Andrew does not backtrack.
Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams stated that King Charles III has desired his brother to downsize for a long time. This desire comes amidst Charles’ ongoing health concerns, as he is undergoing treatment for an undisclosed cancer. The Prince and Princess of Wales are set to vacate Adelaide Cottage soon and transition to Forest Lodge.
On October 17, Andrew announced that he would be surrendering his Duke of York title and other honors after renewed scrutiny related to his well-documented connection with the late Jeffrey Epstein. He stated that the ongoing allegations distract from the work of His Majesty and the entire royal family.
Andrew remarked that with the approval of King Charles, he felt compelled to take a further step, thus deciding not to use his title or the honors he had received. He maintained his strong denial of the accusations against him.
Subsequent information revealed that Andrew had been living rent-free in Royal Lodge for over 20 years, a situation confirmed by The Times U.K. The newspaper acquired a leasehold agreement stating that Andrew had initially paid £1 million for the lease, along with £7.5 million for renovations carried out in 2005. Since 2003, he has paid only a nominal rent of “one peppercorn” annually.
The Times also reported that if Andrew were to terminate his lease prematurely, the Crown Estate would owe him approximately £185,865 per year in compensation, adding up to over £557,595 until the lease expires in 2028.
Interestingly, reports have suggested that Andrew has sufficient funds to sustain his residence at Royal Lodge, with the legitimacy of these funds confirmed by the Keeper of the Privy Purse.
Speculation arises from a claim that King Charles secretly pays Andrew’s rent, allowing him to remain in the lavish Royal Lodge. This allegation was supported by Ingrid Seward, the editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine. Buckingham Palace has yet to comment on this development.
Andrew withdrew from public life in 2019 amid his controversial association with Epstein. In recent days, this announcement occurred shortly after the posthumous memoir of Virginia Roberts Giuffre was released on October 21. Giuffre, who claimed she was trafficked by Epstein, accused Andrew of sexual misconduct when she was 17 years old.
Emerging emails indicate that Andrew maintained contact with Epstein longer than he previously disclosed, further complicating his situation. In 2021, Giuffre filed a lawsuit against Andrew, who denied the charges and claimed to not recall meeting her. The case was eventually settled in 2022 for an undisclosed amount, during which Andrew did acknowledge Giuffre as an “established victim of abuse.”
Stripping Andrew of his royal titles would necessitate legislative action. Although he relinquished the Duke of York title, he will retain his status as a prince, being the son of the late queen. His title of Royal Highness has been inactive since 2019. Buckingham Palace and the British government are facing significant pressure to officially withdraw Andrew’s royal titles and his opulent residence.
A source close to Andrew remarked that while he is prepared to vacate Royal Lodge, he has set specific demands that need addressing. The source stated that he is realistic about his circumstances and recognizes that his time at Royal Lodge is coming to an end.
