Prince William was resolute in his intention to rekindle his relationship with Kate Middleton, as he sought to demonstrate his commitment for the long term.
In 2007, after a widely publicized split earlier that year, the couple reunited. On Valentine’s Day 2008, the heir to the British throne wanted to impress Kate by orchestrating a romantic dinner, highlighting his seriousness about their relationship.
Grant Harrold, a former butler for King Charles III, shared insights from his memoir, The Royal Butler: My Remarkable Life in Royal Service. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Harrold conveyed that William aimed to prove to Kate that he was fully committed to their future together.
Harrold recalled, “When they got back together, it was fresh, it was like a double boost.” He noted that both William and Kate began making greater efforts in their relationship. He stated, “They had this romantic dinner for Valentine’s Day, which they asked me to do, which they had never done before. Suddenly, they wanted to do that. I felt that [William] was saying, ‘Look, I’m serious. This is going to up a level.’ That’s what I felt.”
The romantic dinner served as a pivotal moment in their relationship. Harrold elaborated on this by saying, “It was almost like a reset button, but this was serious. The first time around, it was boyfriend-girlfriend, ‘Oh, let’s eat here, let’s chill here, let’s do that.’ Suddenly, it was a bit more, ‘I’m serious, and I’m going to show you I’m serious.’ That’s how it came across, which was amazing.”
William and Kate’s journey together began in 2004, when they first went public with their relationship. As time progressed, Harrold suggested hosting a formal dinner for the couple, but his earlier suggestions received playful dismissals. However, as Valentine’s Day 2008 approached, William unexpectedly revisited the idea and expressed his interest in holding the dinner.
Harrold had the opportunity to facilitate a intimate dinner setting for the couple at Highgrove House, the royal family’s country residence. By this time, William and Kate had been back together for nearly six months and appeared closer than ever.
Recalling their initial split, Harrold admitted he felt “really gutted.” He explained, “I got to know her from the early days as much as I knew William and got on with both of them.” The butler noted his longing for their eventual union, thinking back to how remarkable it would be to witness them as the Prince and Princess of Wales.
During their breakup, Harrold noticed Kate’s absence. “From a selfish point of view,” he recounted, “I always thought, ‘It’s going to be so cool when they get married.’ So, when they split up, I think the first I knew of it was, well, she disappeared.” He added that many staff members expressed sadness over the situation.
In his memoir, Harrold reflected on the intense media scrutiny Kate faced during her relationship with William. Despite the challenges, whispers of their reunion circulated among those close to the royal couple before making headlines.
As Valentine’s Day approached, Harrold was excited to assist William in crafting a memorable evening for Kate. He reminisced about that chilly February night and the picturesque setting they arranged at Highgrove.
“Even though it was a typically chilly February evening, we planned for it to be outside the main house, at the top of the Thyme Walk,” he shared. This charming location featured trimmed golden yews and a hedge, creating a romantic atmosphere for the couple.
Harrold recounted an earlier summer event where he noticed Kate standing alone, overlooked by many. At that time, not everyone was aware of her relationship status with William. He remembered, “When you think of the stunning, elegant princess she blossomed into, it was possibly the last time she could have been at an event and remained anonymous.”
Having worked in the king’s household from 2004 to 2011, Harrold had the privilege of witnessing the royal couple’s wedding in 2011. He expressed appreciation for being present during their transformative journey.
Throughout their relationship, Harrold perceived Kate as an ideal partner for William. He stated, “I knew it before the breakup. They were so sweet together. I couldn’t see William with anyone else.” He admired how Kate provided support and encouragement to William during his royal duties.
Harrold drew parallels between Kate and the late Princess Diana, highlighting qualities that endeared them to the public. He stated, “Diana had that shyness and elegantly gentle demeanor, just like Kate. The public has embraced her much like they did with Diana, but thankfully, history is different this time around.”
Reflecting on Kate’s recent health challenges, Harrold acknowledged the public’s strong support for her. He noted that while Diana garnered sympathy amid her divorce, Kate has received warm encouragement during her battles with health issues.
Harrold likened William and Kate’s relationship to that of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, emphasizing qualities of love, companionship, and teamwork. He remarked, “The love, the companionship, the support, the working relationship, the friendship — it reminds me of the Queen and Prince Philip.”
Looking ahead, Harrold expressed optimism about their future together. He believes they are dedicated to their journey as partners in life, stating, “I think this is a long-term partnership between the two of them. They’re in it for the whole way, literally till death do them part completely.”
