A small town in England, situated north of Manchester, has witnessed a significant political shift as two pro-Gaza candidates secured seats previously held by the mainstream Labour Party. Both candidates, Maheen Kamran and Azhar Ali, ran as independents during the local elections held on May 1.
Maheen Kamran, just 18 years old, claimed the Burnley Central East seat on the Lancashire County Council. Simultaneously, Azhar Ali was elected as the county councillor for the Nelson East ward. Their electoral victories are part of a larger trend, with several pro-Gaza candidates—including former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn—making significant gains in last year’s general elections.
Azhar Ali’s political journey has been marred by controversy. A former Labour Party member, he was suspended over allegations of antisemitism during a previous election cycle. Labour had initially stood by Ali after he made inflammatory claims regarding Israel’s role in enabling Hamas’ massacre on October 7. Following public backlash, he later described his remarks as “deeply offensive, ignorant and false”. Consequently, Labour rescinded their support, leading to his suspension.
