Recent national polling reveals that while many Americans support the idea of downsizing the federal government, they hold reservations about how billionaire Elon Musk and the newly established Department of Government Efficiency are executing these cuts. Such findings reflect a complex public sentiment regarding the ongoing reforms under President Donald Trump’s administration.
After reclaiming the White House in the last election, President Trump took decisive action by creating the Department of Government Efficiency, abbreviated as DOGE. His aim was to significantly revamp and reduce the size of the federal government. He appointed Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, to lead this initiative.
Within the initial months of Trump’s administration, DOGE has actively engaged with federal agencies, targeting what the administration describes as billions of dollars in unnecessary spending. The aggressive approach has led to a considerable reduction in the federal workforce and sparked widespread public discourse, as well as a series of legal challenges.
In a recent NBC News poll conducted from March 7 to 11, 46% of voters believed the creation of DOGE was beneficial, while 40% disagreed. Despite this overall approval, a significant 47% of respondents expressed negative sentiments towards the department. Only 41% of those surveyed held a positive view of DOGE, indicating pronounced ambivalence.
Another survey by Reuters/IPSOS, carried out from March 11 to 12, showed a similar trend. Respondents voiced strong support for downsizing the federal government at a rate of 59% to 39%. However, when it came to the mass termination of federal employees, only 38% supported these cuts, while 59% opposed them. Additionally, 50% of participants believed that Trump and Musk had overreached in their spending reductions.
President Trump has consistently lauded Musk’s work with DOGE in various public addresses. During a recent primetime speech to Congress, Trump referred to Musk as a “real patriot” whose actions have sparked important discussions about government efficiency. Nonetheless, this warm reception contrasts sharply with public perception of Musk himself.
According to the NBC News poll, a mere 39% of respondents held a favorable view of Musk, while 51% viewed him negatively. The Reuters/Ipsos survey highlighted this trend even further, showing Musk underwater at 38% approval against 59% disapproval.
Additional insights from a Quinnipiac University national poll conducted from March 6 to 10 revealed that 60% of voters disapproved of the way DOGE has managed federal workers. A notable 54% of respondents felt that Musk and DOGE were detrimental to the country, while only 40% believed they were contributing positively.
A CNN poll from March 6 to 9 illustrated public unease regarding the magnitude of the proposed cuts. Over 60% of voters feared that DOGE’s actions would be excessive, potentially leading to the shutdown of vital federal programs. Meanwhile, 37% felt that the cuts were insufficient in addressing fraud and waste within the government.
Acknowledging the mixed feedback surrounding Musk and DOGE, Trump recently instructed his Cabinet members to take greater control over the downsizing efforts within their respective departments. On social media, he emphasized the need for a more surgical approach, advocating for the use of a “scalpel” instead of a “hatchet” in executing government staffing reductions.
As Trump’s administration continues to navigate the complex landscape of government efficiency, public opinion clearly indicates a divide. While many Americans endorse the fundamental idea of downsizing the federal government, there is significant apprehension about the methods being employed. As the administration works to implement these drastic changes, it faces the challenging task of balancing efficiency with public trust.
The reactions from various polls highlight a crucial narrative that will likely influence future government policies. The sentiments surrounding both Musk and DOGE will play a pivotal role in shaping public perception moving forward, making it essential for the administration to pay close attention to these evolving opinions.
