President Donald Trump is vigorously supporting the GOP’s significant spending and tax cut legislation, which now faces critical votes in the Senate. The bill, as the president declared in a recent social media post, is “ONE GREAT BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL” and is moving ahead as the Senate prepares to cast multiple votes on the Republican-crafted measure.

This proposed legislation, which Trump insists must pass Congress by this Friday, July 4, encompasses many of his campaign promises and priorities for a second term. Key components of the bill include an extension of the 2017 tax cuts, elimination of taxes on tips and overtime pay, substantial funding for border security, and a continuation of his controversial immigration policies.

Voter Opposition Grows Against the Spending Bill

Despite Trump’s enthusiastic endorsement, recent national polls show a significant portion of American voters oppose the legislation. In the latest Fox News national survey, respondents were against the federal budget proposal by a 21-point margin, with only 38 percent in favor compared to 59 percent opposed. Notably, this bill barely passed the House of Representatives last month by a single vote.

The negative sentiment is echoed across various polls conducted in June, including those by the Washington Post, Pew Research, and Quinnipiac University, all revealing a strong opposition to the bill with margins as high as 26 points.

Democratic Opposition and Medicaid Concerns

Democrats have launched a vigorous attack on the spending bill, particularly spotlighting the GOP’s plans to restructure the Medicaid program. This nearly 60-year-old federal initiative provides medical coverage to approximately 71 million low-income Americans. Notably, Senate Republicans have proposed even deeper cuts to Medicaid than those included in the House’s version.

These modifications to Medicaid, alongside cuts to food stamps—another major safety net program—are partially aimed at offsetting the costs associated with extending Trump’s tax cuts. Specifically, 49 percent expressed concerns it would be detrimental, while 23 percent felt it would be beneficial, and another 26 percent viewed it as neutral.

Interestingly, 60 percent of those surveyed claimed to have a good understanding of the bill’s contents, known formally as the One, Big, Beautiful Bill. However, even among those informed voters, a greater percentage still perceived potential harm (45 percent) over benefits (34 percent) for their families.

A Partisan Divide in Support and Opposition

According to the Fox News survey, conducted from June 13 to 16, a noteworthy 73 percent of Republicans expressed support for the bill.
