The Eddie George era launched impressively on Thursday night as the Bowling Green Falcons triumphed over the Lafayette Leopards with a score of 26-7. The game not only marked the team’s first win of the season but also introduced fans to a new furry sensation on the sidelines.
Cameron Pettaway sparked excitement early with a thrilling 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Mar’Kel Porter added to the momentum with his rushing touchdown, while Jackson Kleather showcased his precision by scoring four field goals. However, no moment stole the spotlight quite like Pudge the Cat.
Pudge, a charming three-year-old exotic shorthair Persian, became an overnight social media star during the game. The feline belongs to George Carlson, the long snapper for the Falcons, who had originally brought him into the facility to brighten his teammates’ spirits on a day off.
“I enjoy just making people happy and putting smiles on people’s faces,” Carlson shared. “He’s done that for me for so long, so I wanted to share that joy.”
While not everyone in the locker room was immediately on board with the new addition, the overall love for Pudge grew quickly. Carlson disclosed that he is allergic to cats, adding an interesting dynamic to their relationship. Cornerback Jalen McClendon also voiced his reservations, recalling an incident from his childhood when he was attacked by a cat.
Despite initial hesitations, George embraced Pudge’s presence. “Pudge is cute. My wife loves Pudge. He’s become part of the football family,” he said. “Pudge stays out of my way, I stay out of his way, and we are fine.”
The surge of interest in Pudge may have been ignited by Bowling Green fullback Leo Kemp, who shared a video featuring the cat on his TikTok account. In the clip, Kemp humorously contrasts the school’s impressive $300 million facility with their pride in having a locker room cat.
“Y’all might have a 300 million dollar facility,” Kemp captioned the video, which quickly gained traction, amassing over 367,000 views. The post even attracted comments from the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings, further enhancing Pudge’s growing celebrity status.
As if taking the spotlight during the game was not enough, Pudge boasts his very own Instagram account, which has garnered over 3,600 followers. Fans can enjoy updates on Pudge’s antics and life with the team. Additionally, through a unique Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deal, Pudge-themed T-shirts featuring him as a cartoon character wearing a BG helmet are now available for sale.
The relationship between the Falcons and Pudge transcends the football field. Players have rallied around the cat, finding joy and comfort in his presence. Pudge has solidified his role not just as a team mascot, but as a source of camaraderie for the players, uniting them beyond the sport.
In a world where off-field distractions often loom large, Pudge offers a refreshing and heartwarming presence. His ability to bring smiles and laughter encapsulates the spirit of teamwork that the Falcons strive to embody.
