On his podcast “Soul Boom,” actor Rainn Wilson, known for his role in “The Office,” shared insights about his liberal friends’ responses to the assassination of Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA. During a recent episode, Wilson noted that he encountered mixed feelings among his peers at a social gathering.
Some expressed sentiments that could be described as a ‘good riddance’ attitude towards Kirk’s death, highlighting a troubling shift in emotional responses to political violence. Wilson recounted, “I spoke to a couple of — let’s say — liberal friends last night at an event, and they were like, ‘You won’t find me shedding any tears.’ Someone else commented, ‘Oh well.’ There was a bit of a good riddance thing, and it’s like, ‘Guys, no.’ We cannot think or talk that way. That is not okay.”
The conversation took an even more serious tone as Wilson acknowledged his disagreements with Kirk’s political views but emphasized that violence is never an acceptable response. He stated, “Shooting someone that we disagree with, even if they’re vociferous and loud and out there, is so colossally wrongheaded.” This viewpoint served as a reminder of the broader implications of political violence.
Wilson’s reflections came during his chat with fellow actor Mark Ruffalo, who joined the discussion to provide his perspective on the tragedy. Ruffalo mentioned that Kirk’s assassination resonated with him personally, given his own experiences with gun violence within his family.
Ruffalo expressed concern about the societal implications of celebrating political violence. He stated, “There’s no winning. We’ll never win this way. If we cheer on our opponents being hurt or harmed in any way, we lose as a society. I know what his family is going through. I understand that on such a personal level, and it’s a tragedy that not only affects the person who is killed but also the entire family and community around that person.”
Despite their political differences, he conveyed compassion for Kirk’s family, saying his heart broke upon hearing the news of the assassination. This emotional reaction highlights the complex nature of political rivalries in contemporary America.
Wilson questioned the language often used to describe political figures, suggesting that calling someone an
