Randy Travis is embracing the power of artificial intelligence as he continues to create new music, more than a decade after suffering a life-threatening stroke.
The stroke, which occurred in 2013, left Travis grappling with aphasia, a condition that affects one’s ability to communicate effectively. Despite these challenges, Travis has managed to release two new songs, including “Where That Came From” in 2024 and his latest single, “Horses in Heaven.” Additionally, he has extended his “More Life Tour,” which began last spring, through the fall of 2025.
In a recent interview with Garden & Gun, Randy’s wife, Mary Travis, shared insights into how AI has facilitated this musical resurgence.
Mary Travis explained the misconceptions surrounding the use of AI in creative processes. “People think you just plug it in a computer and it spits out a song, and there’s no creativity involved. That could not be farther from the truth. It took eleven months for us to produce a single song, which is significantly longer than the typical timeline for an album,” she stated.
Longtime producer Kyle Lehning played a pivotal role in the process by sending the raw vocals from approximately 45 of Randy’s songs to a team in London. They applied a vocal line provided by country musician James Dupré, allowing them to blend the vocal elements seamlessly into the new tracks.
Mary recounted the excitement of hearing the final product. “When it came back from London, Kyle and Randy worked their magic in the studio to perfect the song. They focused on maintaining Randy’s tone and inflections, ensuring it sounded just like him. When we finally heard the result, we knew it was well worth the effort,” she said.
Thanks to the advancements in AI, Randy Travis was able to return to the stage. James Dupré has joined him on tour as a special guest vocalist, contributing to the performances on the “More Life Tour” that started last spring.
Randy expressed his enthusiasm for the tour’s extension, saying with a smile, “Just a lot. Yeah.” His connection with fans and the energy of performing again brings him immense joy. Mary noted that while some may find it difficult to hear their music performed by others, Randy embraces it, feeling that music belongs to everyone.
Mary conveyed that AI has been a “wonderful” asset for her husband since the stroke, transforming their expectations for the future. “In 2013, we could never have imagined this technology emerging,” she reflected. When approached by Cris Lacy at Warner about AI in music production, both were eager to explore its potential. Mary expressed her longing to hear Randy’s voice in new music after all these years.
She emphasized Randy’s pioneering spirit in music. “When you think about the Toby Keith song, ‘Don’t Let the Old Man In,’ that’s Randy Travis. He’s not allowing adversity to dictate his future. Instead, he continuously seeks ways to innovate and make a difference,” she remarked.
In 2023, Randy and Mary discussed his recovery journey and music career during a conversation with Fox News Digital. They highlighted a tribute concert that also served as a fundraiser for the Randy Travis Foundation, focusing on stroke and aphasia awareness, as well as promoting music education in schools.
“Our goal is to raise awareness about strokes and the potential for life after such events,” Mary explained. “We learned that engaging with life is the most effective rehabilitation. We encourage people to reconnect with what they love, even if others wonder why they are still out there. Just dance as if nobody’s watching and sing as if nobody’s listening.” This approach to life has been deeply therapeutic for Randy.
Mary also emphasized their unwavering faith as a critical element of their recovery journey. “Randy is very faithful. We’ve leaned hard on God. Ten years have passed since his stroke, and we count each day as a blessing. We continuously express gratitude for His grace and mercy,” she stated.
The incredible journey of Randy Travis serves as a testament to resilience, innovation, and the transformative potential of technology in music. As he continues to redefine his career and share his passion with fans, his story resonates as a beacon of hope and inspiration in the face of adversity.
