Raw milk remains a controversial topic within the food and health sectors. At the federal level, it remains unregulated, placing the responsibility for safety standards squarely on individual states. Currently, only eight states—including California—allow the unrestricted sale of raw milk.
Mark McAfee, the CEO and founder of Raw Farm, envisions significant changes on the horizon as Robert F. Kennedy Jr. takes on the role of Health and Human Services secretary. According to McAfee, the landscape of raw milk sales and regulation could shift dramatically.
“I think you’re going to see major changes within six to eight months,” McAfee stated in a recent interview. However, he cautions that it will take time for states to adapt to any new regulations, which could extend the timeline to two or three years.
Raw Farm has been operational since 1998 and has successfully cultivated a market for its products. Currently, the farm sells its goods to around 500 retail locations across California. McAfee asserts that business is thriving, echoing growing consumer demand for high-quality raw milk.
“We realized that consumers wanted a product that is easily digestible and highly nutritious,” McAfee remarked. His farm relies on standards set by the American Association of Medical Milk Commissions to ensure the quality and safety of its raw milk for human consumption.
With raw milk often touted for its health benefits, McAfee explains that it is rich in bioactive components that pasteurization destroys. These compounds play a crucial role in immune defense and overall health. He frames raw milk as an essential part of the diet, akin to breast milk for mammals.
McAfee labeled raw milk as “more powerful than any other food.” As it gains popularity, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, sales have surged. Prior to the pandemic, sales were increasing at a rate of 10 to 12 percent annually. Now, the growth rate has accelerated to approximately one percent per week, a remarkable increase attributed to heightened consumer interest.
“Some stores have opted to dedicate part of their shelf space for raw milk, replacing eggs due to supply shortages,” he noted. “We receive urgent calls for more deliveries because we often sell out within days.”
While there are benefits to raw milk, it is crucial to recognize the associated risks. McAfee highlights the importance of sourcing raw milk from reputable farmers who adhere to high safety standards. Improper handling and poor farming practices can lead to contamination with harmful bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella.
